Thappad Day 1 Box Office: Taapsee's Hard Hitting Film Registers Slow Start With Rs. 3.07 Cr., Expected To Grow Over Weekend

Taapsee Pannu’s Thappad is out in theatres and is already creating a stir with a positive word of mouth. The film talks about domestic violence that we tend to normalize in our very patriarchal society has been hailed by Bollywood celebrities who watched it and critics alike for the powerful message that it sends across.

Despite all the buzz around Thappad, which has been hailed by Ayushmann Khurrana as the most important film of our generation, took a slow start at the box office on its opening Friday. The film registered a growth towards the latter half of the day and in total has managed to rake in Rs. 3.07 crores.

The film that was originally planned for a Women’s Day release was preponed and got a limited screens owning to the competition from Ayushmann Khurrana’s Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan and Vicky Kaushal’s Bhoot The Haunted Ship, which released last week and are still going strong.

Taapsee in a conversation with Hindustan Times revealed she hope to break her fiery image with this film where she plays a vulnerable yet strong-headed housewife. “Thappad is one of the most challenging projects of my career because I carry this image of a firebrand actor and people think that isse koi maarega toh yeh ghumaake maaregi. We were trying to strip off that firebrand image to make her resonate with the average Indian woman who still believes in keeping things to herself and not fighting back. And to make my audience believe in my character Amrita who is submissive and vulnerable, was tough,” she was quoted saying.

Thappad is expected to grow well over the weekend.
