The nurses were confined within the hospital building and not allowed to go out and when ISIS finally reached the hospital, they were taken hostage and moved to Mosul, while they threatened to blow up the hospital.  The nurses who were in touch with the Kerala Chief Minister and Indian officials were asked to plead mercy or cooperate if things went too far. They were ensured that they will be saved through a military operation if that is what it took.

Indian officials, on the other hand, tried tooth and nail to rescue the nurses in captivity and were finally released by the ISIS to Indian officials and brought back home on 5 July 2014. The complete details of their rescue were never fully revealed.

Tiger Zinda Hai has dramatized the incident to fit the fictional story of Tiger who has been glorified as the hero in the rescue operation. The trailer though looks like a promising action film with Katrina Kaif and Salman Khan out to save the day.
