Which Student Of The Year Star Is Succeeding At The Box Office?

The year was 2012 and Indians were gearing up for the festival of Dusshera as well as the big release of that week, Student Of The Year. Bollywood has a long tradition of releasing big films featuring huge stars during the festival season to please the audiences as well as to rake in a majority of the box office share.

Student Of The Year didn't feature big Bollywood stars nor it was such a big budget film, but it did have the backing of 2 major Bollywood production houses, Red Chillies and Dharma Productions. Now, you can't go wrong if you have Karan Johar, one of the few directors in Bollywood who has never given a flop and who ranks among the best. The cast featured 3 newcomers of which 2 were star kids and one was an outsider.

While the critics weren't kind towards the all glossy and superficial world shown in the film, they did praise the 3 lead actors and touted them as the future Bollywood superstars. Now, fast forward 5 years and we are in 2017. 5 years have passed since SOTY release and the 3 stars are household names. All 3 have a crazy fan following, enviable social media presence and a particular set of skills that sets them apart from their contemporaries. All 3 are in demand as they have a number of projects lined up in the future. Let's take a detailed look at the performances and box offices of the 3 Student Of The Year stars:

Varun Dhawan- Total films:9 Hits:8 Average:1 Flops:0

The actor has never set a wrong foot with his choices and all of his films have brought him immense appreciation. He has an enviable record where he hasn't given a single flop in his career. He has starred in a total of 9 films and all of them have been hits barring Dishoom which was an average performer and he also shared the screen with John Abraham. His Judwaa 2 is the second highest grosser of 2017 with collections of 138 Crores and he has also given another super hit in 2017 in Badrinath Ki Dulhania. Of the 3 stars, he leads the race and is way ahead of the competition. Just like in the film, he's still the Student Of The Year!

Alia Bhatt- Total Films: 9 Hits: 6 Average: 2 Flops: 1

She is currently one of the most talented actresses working in the industry today and has given a new meaning to the leading lady title. Gone are the days where actresses just appeared as the 'damsels in distress' and waited for their 'knight in the shining armor'. All of her characters have been strong and independent and she portrays the changing Indian women effectively. She has the caliber to carry films on her own and has given remarkable performances in films like Udta Punjab, Dear Zindagi, and Highway. She kind of missed the beat with Shaandar but she did change the game in Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania and proposed the lead actor in the most romantic SRK way, so we can give her a hall pass with this one. 

Sidharth Malhotra- Total Films: 7 Hits: 3 Average: 1 Flops: 3 (His 8th film Ittefaq released yesterday, so we won't include it)

The outsider from Delhi was an assistant director to Karan Johar in My Name Is Khan. He debuted as the ambitious middle-class boy Abhimanyu Singh and became a darling of the audiences as his sacrifice for the SOTY title made him the Baazigar of that film. He followed it up with much appreciated Hasee Toh Phasee and the superhit Ek Villain that grossed over a 100 Crores. His next effort Brothers with Akshay Kumar flopped though he returned strongly with Kapoor & Sons. He has been on a roller coaster journey in terms of Box Office results but he has a number of films lined up that could very well set the box office on fire.
