Modern family is an American TV sitcom which shows three families and how they tackle daily problems in a comic way. The three families are related through Jay Pritchett, his son Mitchell Pritchett and daughter Claire Dunphy.

But there are some things about the most followed family on TV that you may not know -

    1.  Luke Dunphy is actually a genius

Nolan Gould, who plays Luke Dunphy, may play a very convincing dunce on the show, but he’s actually a certified genius. Nolan has been a member of Mensa since he was just 4 years old. He has an IQ of 150 and graduated high school when he was 13.

    2.  It was almost an animated series

Creators originally worried that the show wouldn’t appeal to children and considered it as an animated show for a moment in time. Thankfully, they decided to stick with the original form.

    3. Julie Bowen got the role while carrying twins

When Julie landed the part of Claire, she was pregnant with her twins. She was so worried that she was going to miss out on the chance of a lifetime because of her big stomach.

Producers were able to look past her maternal state. When it was time to shoot the pilot, she still hadn’t reached her due date and had to hide her stomach with strategically placed props.

    4.     The cast gets to help out with the script

Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cam, is a very proud Kansas City Native, and writers often come to him to make sure that the jokes about small town culture are correct.

The writers also sometimes encourage the cast to contribute little bits here and there. For example, Eric has written in a shout-out to the man living across the street from his parents in a Valentine’s Day episode

    5.   The cast decided that there was no lead actor or actress

Since season one, the actors all had a pact that they would never view themselves as a lead in the show, but, instead, always as a supporting role.

This mentality really does help the dynamic of the show.

    6.   There’s only one recurring, non-family member

Dylan, Haley’s on-off boyfriend, is the only character not related to the family to appear in every season of the show so far.

    7.      The writers wrote Jesse Tyler Ferguson’s real life attempt at coming out on the show

In real life, Jesse Tyler Ferguson had to come out to his father three times, in order for him to accept it. So the writer’s made it part of Mitchell’s story.

    8.  Ed O Neil’s character have been reading the same newspapers for 30 years

O'Neill's Jay reads the same newspaper on Modern Family that O’Neill’s Al Bundy read on Married...with Children.

    9.  There was an explanation for the mockumentary style

Modern Family was initially conceived as a documentary shot by Geert Floorjte. But Geert got cut before Modern Family entered production because show creators Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd decided he was unnecessary. The show was simply shot “documentary-style,” without the fictitious camera crew.

    10. Cam (Eric Stonestreet) is straight in real life

Even though he might be super comfortable at acting gay, Eric Stonestreet is actually completely straight in real life.
