5 Best And 5 Worst Films Of Marvel Cinematic Universe
The Avengers will assemble for their penultimate outing in the upcoming sequel titled Infinity War. The film is going to be the conclusion of Marvel's Phase 3 and will also lay the foundation for upcoming Marvel films with the introduction of a bunch of new superheroes. Also, a few superheroes with whom the audiences are now emotionally attached will meet their end.
Iron Man kicked off the MCU in style and soon the films from Marvel Studios became a force to be reckoned with. They ushered in a new era of franchise films which were linked to each other and maintained a continuity never seen before. Soon, other studios started copying the same model but no one has been able to replicate the success seen by Marvel. For the last 10 years, we have seen all the Marvel films and here are the 5 best and 5 worst entries of the MCU:
Best: Iron Man
The film that started it all. There were a lot of apprehensions over Marvel's Iron Man as it's not one of their primary characters and Robert Downey Jr. who Marvel chose to play the role, had a controversial past. Many thought that Marvel's plan to create a superhero universe was impossible.
But, after the release of the film, all the rumors and criticism were laid to rest as the film was not only a great superhero movie, it was a great character study as well and RDJ's charm made sure that people stick to the MCU films.
Worst: The Incredible Hulk
Edward Norton's only outing as The Incredible Hulk earned mixed reviews from the critics as well as the audiences. The production of the film was tense as well as Norton is known to be a demanding actor who repeatedly suggests script rewrites and gives his own opinions as well. The final product turned out to be a mixed bag.
Best: The Avengers
And this is how it's done. Marvel showed that it's the boss when it comes to superhero movies as this Joss Whedon directorial broke many records and earned universal acclaim. Every superhero got to shine on screen and all the doubts about how will Marvel manage so many superheroes in a single film were put to rest.
Worst: Iron Man 2
Robert Downey Jr.'s 2nd outing as the Iron Man didn't get much love from the critics or the fanboys as well. Its one of the weakest entries of the MCU and suffered from a weak script, hasty production, and weak villains. Even though the film was a box-office hit, it is still considered as one of the worst MCU films.
Best: Guardians of the Galaxy
No one thought that they would get their own movie but led by a charming Chris Pratt, the Guardians of the Galaxy was a smash hit at the box-office and one of the most well-reviews marvel films ever. A bunch of outcasts who come together to take on an enemy who wants to control the universe. The film works well both as a superhero film as well as a buddy-comedy.
Worst: Avengers: Age of Ultron
The expectations were sky high from the sequel to The Avengers and director Joss Whedon himself admitted later, they kind of missed the beat with this one. The film was long, overstuffed and suffered from a weak plot. Ultron himself wasn't that compelling as a villain as well. The entertainment quotient of this film was far less than that of The Avengers.
Best: Dr. Strange
Probably one of the finest introductions to a superhero in the MCU, super successful and super cocky neurosurgeon Dr. Stephen Strange gets into a car accident following which he travels to Nepal to heal himself. He soon becomes the Sorcerer Supreme and now takes care of one of the Infinity Stones. The film had great visuals, a compelling story, and great performances.
Worst: Thor: The Dark World
The sequel to Thor is a dull outing which is just an excuse to keep the franchise going and is the worst outing of the God of Thunder. Chris Hemsworth looks like he is mouthing lines from a teleprompter and Natalie Portman looks totally disinterested as Jane. Patty Jenkins was fired as the director before Game of Thrones alum Alan Taylor was brought in as a replacement.
Best: Thor: Ragnarok
Thor totally redeemed himself in his 3rd solo outing and the bad memories of The Dark World seemed to be in distant past. Kiwi director Taika Waititi took over the directing duties and treated it as a comedy film first and a superhero film later. It was a major box-office success as well apart from earning highly positive reviews.
Worst: Ant-Man
While Ant-Man was entertaining thanks to the performances by its actors the film had the feel of a sitcom and was quite different from Edgar Wright's version which everyone feels would have stayed true to comics if he had directed the film.
