5 Popular Akshay Kumar Movies You Will Never See On TV
If you’re an ardent Akshay Kumar fan, you’ll know which film came to his rescue in the late 90’s while he was going through a turmoil with a string a flops. Are you aware? No? We’ll divulge the details later. One man who came to Akshay’s rescue not only gave him a much needed revival but also delivered a number of hits with the actor post then. The man we are talking about here is filmmaker, producer and writer Suneel Darshan.
Suneel Darshan is one strange fraternity member who has chosen not to sell the satellite rights of any of his movies ever since he started in 1988 as a producer. Anyway, while that’s his prerogative not to let the TV audiences watch his films, the man has kept millions of Khiladi fans deprived of so many of his popular and (I must say) entertaining movies he’s done over the years.
So here are 5 Akshay Kumar movies that you have never seen on TV and will probably never will.
Jaanwar (1999)
Jaanwar’s enormity in terms of popularity would have been proportionately high, had this film been a frequent TV watch. With a star cast like Akshay Kumar, Karisma Kapoor, Shilpa Shetty, Mohnish Bahl, Shakti Kapoor, Ashutosh Rana and Ashish Vidyarthi, this film was one of the highest grossing movies of the year. An action drama with a lovely quotient of a father-son relationship, Jaanwar had won over the audiences completely. Go and check out its songs after you’re done reading this and see if it rings a bell!
Ek Rishtaa: The Bond Of Love (2001)
So this brought the first ever collaboration of Akshay Kumar with Amitabh Bachchan and you didn’t even know about it, right? Released in 2001, this film had the potential of being one of the biggest family dramas to come out of Indian cinema in a year that already had K3G in waiting. Ek Rishtaa was a story of a well off family that goes through a crisis after things turn bad between the father and his son. In a year, that had films like Lagaan, Gadar and K3G in offering, Ek Rishtaa was still in the top 10 earners of the year.
Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya (2002)
This was one of those movies where Abhishek Bachchan inevitably had to take the blame for its failure. However flopped, Haan Maine Bhi Pyaar Kiya was one film that made way for the much talked about Abhishek-Karisma real life romance. Film’s music by Nadeem Shravan was one of the most liked albums of the year but Akshay unluckily didn’t have this film working in his favor. While Haan Maine Bhi.. made a lot of headlines when released and got its entire album to be mandatory played at weddings, everybody who later wanted to see this film on TV have only been left waiting.
Andaaz (2003)
This should certainly be one film every Akshay fan would totally know about. Released in 2003, Andaaz was directed by Raj Kanwar under Suneel Darshan’s production. One of the top albums of the year, Andaaz had set the cash registers on fire with its thunderous opening at single screens in mass oriented regions. A declared hit, Andaaz couldn’t have been a bigger release back then for its lead cast that was introducing the Miss Universe and Miss World together. A bit unfair for audiences no? Such a big hit, big music, debut of the beauties and you don’t find it on TV! We bet you keep running into people listening to the tracks of Andaaz even today.
Dosti: Friends Forever (2005)
10 years ago when Dosti hit the screens, Akshay’s fans were found queueing up to theaters to grab their seats for first day first show. With Akshay Kumar, Bobby Deol, Kareena Kapoor and Lara Dutta in the frontline, Dosti made for a grand project to come out that year but unfortunately didn’t end up working for its reasons. A sentimental narrative of two friends and their lives, the film had mixed reception from fans and critics. While fans found the film quite touching with too much of emotions, it just didn’t get going in midst of a highly packed slot of biggies. Today, when you think about watching it, there’s no hope from TV.
While there may be several of Khiladi Kumar movies we may not want to watch on TV, we’ll have our reasons to not watch them for being bad. However, for fans who haven’t even got an opportunity to judge these 5 films of his, we suggest they grab a DVD and enjoy what you couldn’t in theaters. Dear Suneel Darshan, we may not be too tempting to watch your directorial debacles like Shaka Laka Boom Boom or Mere Jeevan Sathi, but why keep the loyal Akkians away from some of his most wonderful work?
