Republic Day is an important event, so there can be little doubt that this is a coveted day to release films. But more than the day itself, Bollywood looks forward to tap the collections over the Republic Day weekend and maximize on the holiday. But that also means that this is the weekend over which many Bollywood films have fought out. Needless to say, there have been clashes on most Republic day weekends especially in this decade.
But not all films win. While some have flopped with a solo release itself, some have suffered due to the clashes. Here is a list of all the clashes on Republic Day weekend and who won the box office number game:
1. Raees VS Kaabil (2017)
This was one of the biggest clashes of all times. Initially, Kaabil was slated to release on Republic Day itself and Raees was to be released in 2016. But due to some problem, Raees chose Republic Day of 2017. The makers of Kaabil tried to avoid the clash and preponed the film to 25th January, but the makers of Raees followed the suit and both film clashed a day before Republic Day. Raees and SRK won the clash.
2. Airlift VS Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 (2016)
Akshay Kumar has made Independence Day and Republic Day his own! So, in 2016, Akshay had a release each for both Republic Day and Independence Day weekends. His first film of the year was Airlift which was about the operation carried on Kuwait. Despite flaks received by the government for lack of good research and over simplification of a complex operation, the film did extremely well and destroyed the adult comedy that clashed with it- Kya Kool Hai Hum 3 which was the 3rd installment of the Kya Kool Hai Hum franchise!
3. Baby VS Dolly Ki Doli (2015)
In 2015, it was a clash between Akshay Kumar and Sonam Kapoor. While the former release Baby, which was a huge hit, the later came out with Dolly Ki Doli about a con bride. Needless to say, Akshay Kumar won the fight.
4. Race 2 VS Akaash Vaani (2013)
The second installment of 2008 film Race released in 2013 on the Republic Day weekend. Apart from Saif Ali Khan and Anil Kapoor, the film also had Jacqueline Fernandez, John Abraham and Deepika Padukone. The other release was Luv Ranjan’s Akaash Vaani that starred Pyaar Ka Punchnama’s popular Jodi, Kartik Aaryan and Nushrat Bharuccha. The film was a flop and Race 2 went on to become a hit!
5. Dhobi Ghat VS Hostel (2011)
2011 had the small budget Aamir Khan release Dhobi Ghat. Along with that, another small budget film, Hostel, released. While no one even remembers Hostel, Dhobi Ghat too flopped.
