There are many debates around the longevity of an actress’s Bollywood career once she decides to tie the knot. While the marriageable age has certainly gone up in the film world as well, where more often than not actresses have remained single till their late 30’s, the fact remains that is certainly a stark difference in the number of movies they are offered and the number of films they actually take up. The fact is sadly accepted as it is even though there are many actresses including Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai who are breaking the norm.
Here is what the number of films each of these leading Bollywood ladies has done before and after getting married.
She is one of the strongest performers Bollywood's got and she has delivered some strong female-centric films which are no less than a gift, but post her marriage in 2012 her first hit came as Tumhari Sulu nearly 5 years later in 2017.
Rani Mukherji took a good long break after her marriage in 2014 soon after which Mardani released. Now her next Hichki is her big new release after marriage and motherhood.
She has maintained her steady pace of releases after her wedding to Abhishek Bachchan in 2007. Right from big films like Jodhaa Akhbar to Hollywood movie Pink Panther 2. She took a long break post-2010 and only made a comeback five years later in 2015 with Jazbaa.
Her journey in Bollywood completed 25 years in 2017 and it has been nearly 18 years since her marriage, but Kajol has maintained a steady flow of movies coming in even after marriage with small breaks in between.
She decided to get married at the peak of her career and it severely slowed down her career in Bollywood after she flew away to the U.S. to live with her husband. She thus has less than 10 releases after marriage the biggest of which was Devdas in 2002.
Her career seems to have come to a halt after marriage after nearly 2 years she has not announced any films yet.
Kareena Kapoor has pulled off her marriage and motherhood both with so much glamour that we never missed her so much when she was off-screen. She has been very active on the career front after marriage only taking a break after she announced her pregnancy.
She took a long break after her initial year od her marriage only have comeback in a big way to the silver screen with English Vinglish and we hope to see her continue her great work.
So no matter how far we believe in seeing post marriage stereotypes break for women in the film industry, it really remains true that their careers do bear the brunt.
