Oscars 2018: Tom Hanks, James Franco, Steven Spielberg Snubbed In Leading Categories
The nominations for the 90the Academy Awards also known as the Oscars were announced yesterday and Gullermo Del Toro's The Shape of Water leads the nominations list with 13 nominations in different categories. Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk received nominations in 8 categories while Martin McDonagh's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri follows closely with 7.
The ceremony will take place at the famous Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on 4th March and the Indian telecast will be at 7 am on 5th March. Last year's host, Jimmy Kimmel will be again taking on the hosting reins after his last year's gig received positive reviews from the audiences as well as the critics. This year too, we may see him again feuding with his frenemy, Matt Damon.
Every year, the Oscars nomination list springs out big surprises as well as shocking snubs. The criteria of including actors, films and other crew members in the nominations are by the vote count which the Academy Members put in before the nominations. This year too, there are some pleasant surprises in the form of independent dramas like Get Out and Lady Bird for which the Academy is getting all the love but there are some shocking snubs for which it's getting a lot of heat from the fans, critics and the media.
Best Actor in a Leading Role: It came as a shock to many when the best actor nominees didn't include James Franco's portrayal of the eccentric director Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist. The actor won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical and even Matt Damon got a nomination for the Best Actor at the Oscars after winning Golden Globe for the Martian (best actor in a comedy/musical). It seems like the recent allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour against Franco may have played spoilsport. While Tom Hanks, America's best actor didn't receive a nomination for his work on The Post either.
Best Actress in a Leading Role: Michelle Williams won universal acclaim for her portrayal of Gail Harris in Ridley Scott's All the Money in the World and received nominations in all other major awards but she was missing from the Leading Actress nomination list.
Best Actor in a Supporting Role: Armie Hammer and Michael Stuhlbarg were surprise omissions from the Best Actor in a Supporting Role list. Both starred in Call Me By Your Name, which many are calling 2017's best film.
Best Actress in a Supporting Role: Hong Chau should have been nominated for her amazing turn in Alexander Payne's Downsizing but she also missed on a nomination. Many critics called her the best thing about the film.
Best Director: The Best Directors list didn't include directors like Steven Spielberg for The Post, Ridley Scott for All the Money in the World and Martin McDonagh for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Many fans and critics are calling on the Academy to reconsider the nominations.
Also, Wonder Woman was one of the biggest snubs as the film failed to secure nominations in any category, both technical and performance.
