Padman V Padmaavat: Who Is Going To Win The Box Office Clash?
On 25th January, the Indian audiences will witness the first big box-office clash of 2018. Akshay Kumar's Padman which also stars Sonam Kapoor and Radhika Apte will clash with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Padmavati starring Deepika Padukone, Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh in lead roles.
Siddharth Malhotra's Aiyaary was also scheduled for release during the same time but had to move its release date in order to avoid a clash with 2 big-budgeted films. Padmaavat was earlier titles Padmavati and was scheduled to release on 1st December 2017 but protests against the film took an ugly turn back then and the release was postponed till the film awaited clearance from CBFC.
Still, the trailer for Padmaavat received a warm reception from all over and people are interested to see another film by the same trio that gave them Bajirao Mastani. Akshay Kumar's Padman also has created a buzz of its own and it will be interesting to see which film emerges the winner at the box-office. Here is a breakdown of the box-office clash between 2 films:
Star Power: Both films boast of a talented star cast that's rounded off by A-Listers. Padman has Akshay Kumar leading from the front and the man is having a golden run at the box-office as all of his films are doing extremely well at the box-office. Padmaavat has stars like Shahid Kapoor, Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone who are amongst the most popular stars in India. It's going to be a clash of the titans!
Controversies: Padmaavat takes away the cake in this case as Padman has not any controversies associated with it and its makers must be breathing a sigh of relief. Ever since Sanjay Leela Bhansali announced his film, the film was under the severe political storm and even after getting clearance from CBFC, the film is still facing protests.
Ban: As much as 5 Indian states, Rajasthan, Bihar, UP, MP and Gujarat have banned Padmavati's release and a few states like Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra are still pondering over the fact whether to release the film or not. Padman hasn't faced any issue like that.
Advantages: While both films are going to enjoy the long-weekend as Republic Day lies on 26th January and chances are both films will take a good opening. Due to controversies, Padmaavat has created a lot of curiosity amongst the audiences and everyone knows that Akshay Kumar is a box-office magnet right now.
Disadvantages: Both the films will eat into each other's business. Last year too, on Republic Day weekend, Raees featuring Shah Rukh Khan and Kaabil led by Hrithik Roshan clashed at the box-office and suffered losses due to the clash. Also, Padmaavat is banned in 5 states and its total box-office collection is surely going to take a hit.
Content: Padmaavat is based on an epic poem written in the year 1540 and is said to be epic period-drama film while Padman is a biopic based on the life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, who dedicated his life to improving the menstrual hygiene in rural India by creating a low-cost sanitary napkins machine.
