Based on Malik Mohammad Jayasi’s poem, Padmavat, the film is the story of Rani Padmini (Deepika), Maharawal Ratan Singh (Shahid) and Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer).

After facing controversies for more than a year, the film is finally hitting theatres on January 25. It was initially scheduled to release on December 1, 2017, but had to be shifted when Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) demanded certain changes and documents for the certification.

Despite the Supreme Court dismissing pleas of state government against its previous order of releasing the film in theatres, several theatre owners in Gujarat are facing the brunt of violent protests by Karni Sena members.
