From Vikram Vedha To '96: 5 Best Films Of Vijay Sethupathi And 5 Upcoming Films That We Cannot Wait To Watch!

Vijay Sethupathi struggled in the industry for almost a decade before he got his first break as a male lead. In fact, his first big role was that of a villain in Sasikumar’s Sundarapandian. Since 2012, in just six years the man has redefined roles and cinematic performances with his choices. Most of his films have worked wonders in the box office, and he now has about 2 dozen projects in the pipeline. In the 20-odd films that he has worked, here is a list of our favourites and the 10 others that he is looking forward to, we have listed five that we cannot wait to watch.

    Vijay Sethupathi of the past:

    Soodhu Kavvum:

Vijay Sethupathi, Bobby Simha, Ashok Selvan, Ramesh Thilak and Karunakaran came together for this Nalan Kumarasamy directorial. Four actors who were yet to make a mark in the industry with the help of an excellent story entertained the audience no end. The comic caper set a new tone to multi-starrer comedies and introduced a promising director to Kollywood. One of the best things about Vijay Sethupathi is the fact that he makes the roles his own, so much so, it is hard to see someone else in the same role.

    Pannaiyarum Padminiyum:

Pannaiyarum Padminiyum is about a Fiat PAL Premier Padmini, which is now a vintage car. How a landlord from a village falls in love with Premium Padmini. Vijay Sethupathi plays the role of a young driver appointed by the landlord. How an entire village falls in love with the car and how their life changes after the car comes into their life is a beautiful and unique tale. Sethupathi worked with another debut director and it worked in his favour.

    Naanum Rowdy Thaan:

Definitely another unforgettable role. Sethupathi plays a smart ‘rowdy’, Pandiyan aka Pondy Pandi who doesn’t use violence. His antics in the film are hilarious, especially considering his mother (Radhika Sarathkumar) plays a cop. He then meets Kadhambari (Nayanthara), a girl with hearing disability, and falls in love with her. The twist in the love story comes in the form of Nayanthara’s revenge. The debut film of Vignesh Shivn, the comic timing in this film, especially Parthiban’s role is excellent!

    Iraivi:

A Karthik Subbaraj directorial, the director and Vijay Sethupathi collaborated for the second time. The result was a film that loved and hated equally. The film had Bobby Simha, Vijay Sethupathi and SJ Suryah in lead roles. The movie did not go well among many viewers who considered it to be misogynistic and reeking of patriarchy. Through it all, the characters still shined for their splendid portrayal.

    Vikram Vedha :

The best Indian film of 2017 according to IMBD, this film’s high point is that there is no protagonist or antagonist. It’s all shades of grey, and the balance between the two characters is impeccable. “Oru Kadha Sollata sir,” is how Vijay Sethupathi’s character Vedha tries to reel in the cop Vikram played by R Madhavan . He doesn’t just pique Vikram’s interest, he has reeled the audience in.

    Vijay Sethupathi of the future:

    Seethakathi

On Vijay Sethupathi’s birthday the first look of his upcoming film with director Balaji Tharaneetharan was released online. The character poster has left us stunned with Vijay Sethupathi’s talent for transformation. He seems to play the role of an old man in the film, and we cannot wait to see what he has in store for viewers.

    Super Deluxe

Vijay Sethupathi’s role in Super Deluxe/ Aneedhi Kathaigal in one of the most intriguing ones in his career. He plays the role of a transgender in the film directed by Thiagarajan Kumararaja. His look in the film surfaced online and went viral leaving fans stunned at his transformation. Not only Vijay Sethupathi, the film also stars Samantha Akkineni who plays the role of Vaembu. So far, very little has been revealed about the project, but the fact that Directors Nalan Kumarasamy, Neelan and Mysskin have reportedly been roped in to write screenplay is exciting.

    96

Another film that we cannot wait to see of Vijay Sethupathi is ’96. His role in the film is unclear and the buzz is that he might play the role of a travel photographer in the film. Trisha’s look in the film accompanied with a child by her side left us wondering what the film was centred on. The title is to signify that the two lead characters are from the same batch of schooling - 1996. The film is a debut project of cinematographer C Prem Kumar.

    Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy

Vijay Sethupathi is going to be making his debut in Tollywood with Chiranjeevi starrer - Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy. The actor will not be playing the lead role in this, but the fact that he is a part of a biopic that stars Amitabh Bachchan , Chiranjeevi, Nayanthara and others is interesting enough. Also, Vijay Sethupathi has held his own in multi-starrers before. So it would be interesting to see how he comes across while sharing screen space with senior actors.

    Untitled Mani Ratnam project

Mani Ratnam films are exciting enough, and when you combine that with names like Vijay Sethupathi, Fahadh Faasil, Arvind Swami, Simbu, Jyothika and Prakash Raj it becomes a film to watch out for. Actors of such talent coming together to share screen space in a ‘Mani Sir’ film gives one high expectations. So far, it is speculated that Vijay Sethupathi could be donning the khaki to play a cop.
