Bollywood movies are synonymous with epic romantic sagas and the major chunk of all time blockbusters are pre-dominantly romantic stories. However, like exception to every rule, there is also no dearth of Bollywood movies that have done really well even with no romantic angles whatsoever. Dhamaal

This mad comedy caper features on everybody’s favorite list of comedy movies in Bollywood. Despite being a super entertainer the movie does not have any romantic angles whatsoever. It completely relies on the chemistry of Ritiesh Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi , Javed Jaffery and Ashish Chowdhry and Sanjay Dutt ’s appeal

Bheja Fry

Another under stated comedy, the movie is solely dependent on Vinay Pathak and Rajat Kapoor and their exceptional acting abilities. A major chunk of the movie entirely focuses on these two characters, and even in absence of any romance, never once the movie falters or become tedious.

A Wednesday

A Wednesday directed by Neeraj Pandey is one powerful film that goes to show that powerful story when backed by equally strong performances come together, it can give any Bollywood romantic saga a run for its money.

Iqbal

A story of aspirations and dreams, Iqbal is one Nagesh Kuknoor directorial that is that is beautiful because of its simplicity and honesty. Even though the movie has no romantic angles, it portrays the beauty of relationships that the protagonist shares with his cricket hating mother, silently supportive mother, a determined sister and an alcoholic yesteryear cricketer who happens to be his coach.

Taare Zameen Par

This movie just says so much with such utter clarity and simplicity about the education system, the parental pressure, the rat race and parenting. The heavily packed narrative that showed the relationship between a dyslexic kid and his ever encouraging art teacher was refreshingly different when it released and still continues to warm our hearts.

No One Killed Jessica

The movie was exceptionally successful in bringing out the absurdity of the Jessica Lal murder trial that took place in real life. The movie was genre bending and is perhaps the most significant film ever made in Bollywood about news media. Featuring Rani Mukerji and Vidya Balan is strong roles, the movie did not need any romantic running around the tree sequence to make it gripping and impactful.

Newton

A gem to come out of Bollywood is 2017’s Newton. The movie that portrayed the tricky business of Indian elections in militant infested hinterlands had Rajkumar Rao in one of his finest performances ever. Again, the strong narrative did not need the added tempering of romance to make it work.

Ragini MMS 2

The movie explored a lot of things, romance, however, was not one of them. This slightly erotic horror film starring Sunny Leone was in a way different than many other horror films in the same genre and was thus a big hit with the audience.

Mardaani

Featuring Rani Mukerji in one of her most powerful roles, Mardaani was the story of female cop who tries to put an end to child traffickers. The movie showed her beating up the baddies like a boss instead of singing romantic numbers in chiffon sarees atop snow covered peaks.

Dangal

You know that Indian movies are going through a major transformation when one of the biggest Bollywood blockbusters of all times is a film which has no romantic angle in it. What can one say or praise about Dangal that has not been said 1000 times over, but everything aside Dangal is a testament that movies without any romantic angles can go big in Bollywood and how.
