Eid for Salman, Diwali for Shah Rukh and Christmas for Aamir! What about the rest? Among all the A-listers that are in the business of entertainment, everybody has sort of identified himself/herself with a release entity. While we mostly thought that Akshay Kumar isn’t a believer in the analogy of attributing to a trademark festive release slot, the times have changed we guess.

Akshay Kumar now undeniably owns a property and that’s Independence Day. What validates this theory very evidently is the choice of his movies and the advance booking of the release date. From 2013 to 2018, Akshay Kumar has only spared one Independence Day to release his film and that was in 2014. If this doesn’t prove this theory, nothing will.
Here are 5 of his movies that prove why Independence Day week is his property now:
Once Upon A Time in Mumbai Dobaraa (15th August 2013)

It may have been a bigtime failure at the box office but the trend perhaps started with this film. Released on Independence Day of 2013, the Milan Luthria directorial opened big, but fell apart post the negative reviews that came its way. However, it probably made Akshay realize the potential of this release slot that happens to be a National holiday.
Brothers (14th August 2015)

Different year but the same story! The film didn’t create any loud noise at the box office and went down as a forgettable affair but once again, it was the time of the release that mattered. Doing a business of close to 75 crores, the film was another addition in the list of Akshay Kumar and his growing love for Independence Day.
Rustom (12th August 2016)

So this is where it probably became clear that Akshay Kumar’s patriotic choices of films needed a patriotic release date as well. Beating the Hrithik Roshan starrer Mohenjo Daro hands down, Rustom was a fast 100 crore grosser and enjoyed the long weekend prospect through Independence Day.
Toilet Ek Prem Katha (11th August, 2017)

Shree Narayan Singh directed Toilet Ek Prem Katha was a straight 100 crore grosser of Akshay Kumar. The film was based on the Swaach Bharat Abhiyan and propagated the building of Toilets in small towns. The film was even made tax free in many states and Akshay once again proved how he owned Independence Day.
Gold (15th August, 2018)

Akshay Kumar isn’t known to plan that far since he keeps making random choices to appear thrice or more times in a year. However, realizing that he’s now being identified with Independence Day, he chose to book the release a lot 2 years in advance. The film that unsurprisingly has a nationalistic touch to itself is titled Gold and is directed by Reema Kagti. Based on the true story of India winning its first Olympic post Independence.
So there we have it: the modern day patriot has an equally patriotic release date as a property!
