5 Bollywood Directors Whose Films Rarely Have An Happy Ending
When Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om said 'Humari Life Mai Bhi Humari Filmon Ki Tarah, End Mai Sab Theek Ho Hi Jata Hai, Happys Endings' we surely could not stop gushing The truth, however, is quite the contrary. Our lives are never really perfect and endings are often not as rose tinted as we would like to believe. However, Bollywood, in general, has always tried to propagate the idea that endings are supposed to be happy.
But there are certain directors who take a closer look at life and just like life itself they rarely believe in a happy conclusion to their stories. Leads dying, people losing and with all other messy emotions, these are a few directors whose films usually do not have a happy ending.
Khamoshi, Devdas, Sawaariya,Ramleela, Bajirao Mastani and recently Padmaavat, All of Sanjay Leela’s Bhansali’s never have are happy ending. The director who is known for making epic love stories come alive on screen, usually have a knack for killing his lead by the end of the picture. Although Sawaariya was one film where nobody dies in the end, but surely no one can the ending a happy one.
Just like life cannot be all about happy endings, his films which look at life as in its messy glory, does not have one either. Known for portraying hard-hitting and raw realities, it is futile to expect a happy expect an ‘and they lived happily ever after’ ending from Anurag Kashyap films as those are rarely the stories he wants to tell as a director.
Mira Nair
One of the most distinguished storyteller of our times, Mira Nair also does not believe in happy ending to films. Her films deal with some of the most complex social issues and even more complex human emotions. And because these complex issues cannot come to a happy conclusion, neither can her films. Fire, Earth and Water, although empowering, had a somewhat bittersweet ending.
Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra
The director that gave us Rang de Basanti, also likes tragic climaxes for his film. None of us know a single soul who did not break down seeing the ending of Rang de Basanti. He even killed the lead pair in Mirzya, and Milkha not winning the final race were all endings that tugged at our heart-strings.
Tigmanhsgu Dhulia
Another director whose vision of films follows the hard realities of lives is Tigmangshu Dhulia. Chartering the unexplored territories of human emotions, Dhulia’s film does not follow the usual trajectory of boy meets girl, falls in love and lives happily ever after. As a result like the rest of the film, his endings are also messy and tragic.
