5 Bollywood Films in Which Social Media Played a Significant Part

Much has been said and written about the power and influence of social media on our lives. However, it is surprising that Bollywood which is adept at exploring all aspects of our lives has been surprisingly lukewarm about exploring the phenomenon in films. There is only a handful of Bollywood movie that attempted to play with the genre. With the hope that Bollywood will finally come out with films based on social media, we remember 5 films in which social media played a significant part.

Bajrangi Bhaijaan

In his quest to find Munni’s home,  Nawazzudin Siddique’s character Chand Nawab uses YouTube to bring people together to help people know about the kid and noble Bajrangi looking for his family. However, it was criticized for engaging in factual errors since YouTube is banned in Pakistan.

Desi Boyz

This was a movie where more than a boon YouTube became a problem. In the movie, it was from a viral YouTube clip that Deepika’s character comes to know that his boyfriend, John is a male stripper which makes her call of her engagement and impending marriage with him.

Mujhse Fraaandship Karoge

It is funny that how given the frenzy around social networking sites in the country, there are a very few movies that actually capture the phenomenon. In the movie two college mates who hate each other in real life slowly falls for each other due to mistaken identities online. Although the movie starred lesser known stars it managed to do pretty well at the box office.

Secret Superstar

This movie brilliantly explored how YouTube has been giving a platform to every artist who wants to showcase their talents to the world but is strapped for opportunities. In the film, Zaira’s character, who is a closet singer is held back due to her conservative and violent father, starts putting up her singing videos on YouTube hiding the identity that ultimately leads to her being a singing sensation.

Noor

A viral YouTube clip is also what the central plot of the movie Noor revolves around. A frustrated journalist tired of fluff tries to do a serious story but things seriously go wrong. The entire disdain of Sonakshi’s character comes out in one video where she explains why Mumbai is killing her. Although the movie did not do too well at the box office, it managed to capture the power that social media has in public conscious awakening.
