5 Reasons Why You Should Be Excited For Rajkummar Rao’s Newton
This Friday saw the release of Rajkummar Rao starrer political Black Comedy ‘Newton’. The FTII graduate has established himself as one of the best actors working in the industry today. We loved Shahid, Kai Po Che and Citylights and also loved the actor’s performance in the sleeper hit Bareilly Ki Barfi. Here are the 5 reasons you should definitely be excited about Newton and why you should catch it in theatres:
The Theme- The film is based against the backdrop of conducting a democratic election in insurgency-hit areas of Chhatisgarh. It focuses on the rookie government clerk Newton, who is tasked with conducting free and fair election in the insurgency-hit area and has to deal with Naxalites as well as the government & security officials to do his job
The Director- The film is the second directorial venture of Amit V Masurkar who directed the highly acclaimed film, Sulemani Keeda in 2013. The film is an oddball slacker comedy and focused on 2 writers struggling for their big break. The film was universally praised and it is eager to see what the director has in store for us in his second outing.
Awards & Recognition- The film was screened at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year and was highly appreciated for its accurate portrayal of the democratic process in India as well as the story of Newton. It also won the award for the best film at International Confederation of Art Cinemas (CICAE) forum. It is also now the offical Bollywood entry for The Oscars.
Rajkummar Rao- The actor has made a name for himself by doing highly acclaimed films over the years and is often regarded as one of the best actors of his generation. The audiences are also showering their love on the content-driven cinema now and Rajkummar along with a few other actors is the torch bearer for binging offbeat cinema under the purview of mainstream audiences.
Time- The time is absolutely right for content-driven films to rule. We have seen films like Gangs of Wasseypur, Udaan, Queen, Shahid doing wonders critically as well as commercially. The audience is embracing these films and a new awakening is happening on the cinematic front. A daring film like Newton that deals with the most sensitive issues in a comical way should definitely be given a chance.
