Some call it repetitive, some call it signature, but you cannot disagree that there are aspects of Sanjay Leela Bhansali films that are look somewhat similar. His recent magnum opus Padmavaat is no different. There are certain sequences in the film that will remind you strongly of Bajirao Mastani and even other Sanjay Leela Bhansali. Here are 5 sequences from the film that had the signature Sanjay Leela Bhansali films.

The Speech Sequence

There is a sequence in the movie where Khilji’s soldiers are on the verge of mutiny due to camping in harsh weather and lack of food and other provisions. The chief comes and informs Khilji’s about the situation and he gives a manipulative but inspiring speech that brings soldiers back together. Minus the manipulative aspect of it, the speech is total throwback to the speech that Ranveer gives in Bajirao Mastani to encourage his soldiers. With a few tweaks here and there it almost has the same essence.

The ‘Ek Dil Hai’ Sequence

This music has been a personal favourite from the film. The song comes at a crucial stage in the movie and beautifully portrays the passion between Padmaavati and Rawal Ratan Singh. Again, first shot of the song that features Shahid in all his rippling muscle glory in a dhoti will straight away transport you to the sequence of the ‘Ang Laga De’ song from Ram-Leela. Apart from Shahid twinning with Ranveer in the scene, the intense passion in both the songs gives the same feel.

The ‘Khalibali’ Sequence

So, this is probably the right time to divulge that Padmavaat will seriously remind you of Bajirao Mastani on many occasions. Another strong ‘Bajirao Mastani’ inspired moment in the movie is the ‘Khalibali’ song sequence. If you have seen the song it is impossible to not instantly remember ‘Malhaari’ from Bajirao Mastani. From celebration of victory to Ranveer Singh ’s palpable energy, the inspiration is very strong.

The ‘Ghoomar’ Song Sequence

This one is a giveaway as almost everybody has seen the ‘Ghoomar’ song and most of them could feel a connection to ‘Deewani Mastani’ from, yes yet again, Bajirao Mastani. From the man watching from the balcony to the first wife sitting in attendance while Deepika dances in all her glory looking literally drop dead gorgeous, the scenes are a major throwback.

The Climax Sequence

Saying too much about will probably amount major spoilers, but all I can say is the final climax sequence in Padmaavat, which is probably the highlight of the entire film strongly resembles the final climax Bhansali’s Devdas. Though the context and the feel is entirely different, but Deepika taking the long march is a strong throwback to Aishwarya’s run in the climax of Devdas.
