8 Bollywood Movies that Avoided the Curse of the Second Half
Of late there has been a lot of discussion around the phenomenon called ‘the curse of the second half’. There is tendency in a lot of movies to lose the grip on the narrative in the second half. As India is the only country in the world where there is an interval in the middle of feature films, it actually becomes a challenge on the part of the filmmaker to keep the interests of the audience intct after the break. Here are a few movies that managed to avoid the curse of the second half.
In terms of impact, Lagaan is still one of the important movies to have come out of Bollywood. Though the movie is widely hailed as a masterpiece, most cinephiles would agree that the second half was more gripping than the first half. The intensity of the second half is more obvious and the match sequence, which is the main highlight of the movie, also features in the second half, making it more engrossing.
Karan Arjun
One of the most sought after re-incarnation/revenge dramas of Bollywood. Most of the important highlights of the movie, again, came in the second half. The angles of re-incarnation and revenge was more intense in the after the interval and the fulfilment of revenge one incident after another gave a sense relief.
Bajrangi Bhaijaan
It is not that Bajrangi Bhaijaan is any less of a fun watch in the first half, but it is only in the second half that the movie starts getting more and more real and interesting. The struggle in the second comes across beautifully and the narrative becomes much more engaging.
Garam Masala
This mad comedy caper is one of personal comedy favourites of Akshay Kumar . The whole mix up and confusion is at its best in the second half and it is also in the second half where Akshay Kumar and Paresh Rawal give a comic performance that is one of their finest.
There is no doubt that this is a beautiful film. The coming together of three friends makes for an pleasant first half, but it is only in the second half that the layered narrative comes into play and the journey is not only more beautiful but also more cinematically meaningful.
In Rustom as well, the film takes a little time to come to the main, thus having a stronger second half than the first half. The drama in the court rooms comes together convincingly and that draws to a winning climax.
Qayamat
This movie is one hit that people have forgotten over time, but nobody can discredit the brilliance of this movie. The movie has a truly gripping second half with great action sequences. The whole escape plan unfolds in way that will surely keep you on the edge of your seat.
Namastey London
The first half of the movie was basically the fun bit, but it is only in the second half that the complexities of the characters are beautifully revealed. Some of the best scenes of the movie including the one where Akshay and Katrina tries to imagine how would it be to meet each other is really beautiful.
