Nagada, Deewani Mastani, Ghoomar: Which Is The Best Deepika Padukone-Sanjay Leela Bhansali Song?

Nagada, Deewani Mastani, Ghoomar: Which Is The Best Deepika Padukone-Sanjay Leela Bhansali Song?

Deepika Padukone shared the ‘most difficult yet most fulfilling song sequence she’s ever shot for’ with her fans on Wednesday. It was the first song, Ghoomar, from her upcoming film, Padmavati.

From the softness of the voices that sings it to the depth of the red and goldens that decorate it, the song is a perfect example of what director Sanjay Leela Bhansali weaves when he gets the best people by his side, especially Deepika. But is it really his best work?

Here, we list the three songs that he has made with Deepika and also the mighty talented singer Shreya Ghoshal and pit them against each to reveal the one true winner. Which of these three songs is best in its music, is beauty and the lasting effect it has on your senses? Vote!

    3. Ghoomar, Padmavati

While we are expecting it to be the best film of all three listed here, the song, a bit disappointingly, doesn’t quite match up. It surely does not lack grand sets, shots to replicate the same, familiar hours of dusk, and a stunning, very graceful performance by Deepika, now a certified chameleon. However, there are still things to not like.

The song is clearly shot in an enclosed space, surrounded by green screens. The shoddy CGI hills and fort still needs a tonne of work as it stands out like a fake monstrosity against the lightly swinging, very real Deepika. The light source is fake. Everyone’s face is awash with strong golden light and hints of a setting sun are seen from all angles. Maybe we are nitpicking but we expect nothing but perfection from Bhansali.

Nagada, Deewani Mastani, Ghoomar: Which Is The Best Deepika Padukone-Sanjay Leela Bhansali Song?

The song itself, sounds ethereal. It’s the kind you would willingly watch dancers perform to and get goosebumps each time. It begins deep and heavy with a strength to it, making you expect an overpowering experience for the next five minutes but as soon as Shreya sings her first words, you realise where the subtlety comes from. Sure, Deepika’s restrained hands, the mild swing of her waist, the intense eyes and a suppressed smile, all contribute to the beauty of it but it all gets tied together with Shreya’s voice that is just what the heavy Rajasthani beats needed.

    2. Nagaada Sang Dhol , Goliyon Ki Rasleela Raam Leela

This was the season’s best song we had heard. The timing was right as it released right before Diwali and Navratras in 2013. It was the flavour of the festive season, played during dandiya nights, parties and in almost all weddings anywhere for that year. And if a song can be danced to, it’s already a hit.

The highly energised performance by Deepika, with her hair flowing everywhere, her bloodshot eyes and the sullen expression on her face, made the song an intense watch too.The thick crescendo at the end with the chorus singing in Gujarati folk, brings a feeling of greatness to a song that was already full of energy.

We deduct some points only because it brings the horrible memories of that mess of a movie.Goliyon Ki Rasleela Raam Leela was, according to me, was one of the worst films by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. The incongruent story, the flimsy characters or even just an unexplained overdose of melodrama was enough to put you off.

    1. Deewani Mastani, Bajirao Mastani

In she walks and it was light, sparkle and all things beautiful. The song begins in a palace of glass and it is hard, if not impossible, to surpass the grandeur of this one. The creamy, golden hue reflected in the mirror is matched by the dancers, the props and also, Mastani.

With her soft, simple eyes shining bright and working perfectly with the stern expression of her face, she makes her way to the glimmering floor. Until now, all you could hear were lyrics by a chorus in Marathi with distinct bounce to them, singing of the arrival of a ‘maharani’. It then elevates into beautiful music played on strings and then into Shreya’s voice, singing of a woman in love. The song reaches chorus and it’s everything fit for royalty.

The song is not only an experience like no other to listen to but also a visual masterpiece. The dancers’ reflections are seen in the million mirrors of the hall and a dread in the eyes of Priyanka Chopra as she realises what she is about to lose, for the first time. It is pivotal to the story as it was here when Bajirao sees who has followed him from what he thought was a mere meeting of chance and Mastani establishes that she isn’t one to be loved and let go.

Deewani Mastani has set a high bar for what we expect from Bhansali and we do not expect anything to cross it anytime soon.
