Karan Johar’s Ae Dil Hai Mushkil made a lot of people wonder if some of the scenes and dialogues were actually inspired from his real life experiences. The director himself never confirmed but also never denied the fact that his directorial did have a few glimpses of his own life.

In his latest book An Unsuitable Boy, he’s confessed all that you were wondering about all this while. Most of it is true. He has explained how this movie is very close to his heart and how the events in it were so real that he had to seek the help of his psychologist/buddy. He got a text from the psychologist saying, “Saw the promos. Feels really surreal, I feel a part of that.”

Karan confirms, “She (the psychologist) walked me through the writing of Ae Dil Hai Mushkil when I was feeling the burden of my unrequited love.”

With Ae Dil Hai Mushil, I feel I’ve put out my first personal piece of work. I don’t want to say it’s an autobiography because there’s a lot of fiction in it but there are scenes and conversations that are very true to what happened in my life. I’m pretty much Ranbir Kapoor in the film, and the film is all about him and his broken heart.

Scene 1: The conversation between Alizeh and Ayaan around the fireplace in Paris

“Rishey jab jismani ho jaate hain toh kahin na kahin dosti mit jaati hai. Pyaar mein junoon hai par dosti mein sukoon hai aur main nahi chahti ki hamare beech ka sukoon kabhi chala jaaye.”

"The person I was in love with told me, ‘I’m glad we’re not having sex. But I was also told, you’re the most important person in my life, you’re my family, you’re my everything, you’re just not my lover. This happened when I was thirty-five. It’s taken me so many years to get over it. I realize that sometimes heartbreak is a luxury." - Karan

    Scene 2: SRK’s Cameo

“Ek tarfa pyaar ki taaqat hi kuch aur hoti hai. Aur rishton ki tarah yeh do logon mein nahin banti ti.”

"I believe in this very strongly. That power of love is mine. To love someone is such a feeling of power, because even if you don’t get that love back, you still have it. I look at the love I had as a source of great strength." - Karan

Scene 3: Ayaan’s concept of third person aka chaanta

Karan further explained, “It hurt only because what was said to me at that point was that this would be a relationship forever, nobody could come in its way, but somebody did. A third person changed the dynamic. There’s always separation because of a third person.

After all this while the same prologue of the book also says that Karan has never had sex with people he’s been in love with. He gave a new insight to the readers in his declaration saying, “The second person got married, moved country and now I’m not in touch with that person any more. The only thing that hurt me was that I promised so much, but I never even got that friendship. Because of the third person who entered the picture. But the first person I was in love with is still very much a part of my life.”

The same book sheds the light on Karan's fall out with Kajol and Karan's wish to become a father.
