Tabah Ho Gaye: Even Madhuri’s Kathak Can’t Hide The Stale Devdas Hangover In The New Kalank Song

Tabah Ho Gaye: Even Madhuri’s Kathak Can’t Hide The Stale Devdas Hangover In The New Kalank Song

Releasing on 17th April, Kalank has been in the news for its stellar star cast which includes Alia Bhatt, Varun Dhawan, Aditya Roy Kapur, Sonakshi Sinha, Sanjay Dutt and Madhuri Dixit. The film will be directed by Abhishek Varman of 2 States fame.

After chart topping numbers such as First Class, Ghar More Pardesiya and the title track, the makers of Kalank have dropped yet another song.  Sung by Shreya Ghoshal, the song Tabah Ho Gaye is a what can be best described as a sad mujra. Here is what we thought about the song.

Madhuri, The Dancing Diva Is Back

Tabah Ho Gaye: Even Madhuri’s Kathak Can’t Hide The Stale Devdas Hangover In The New Kalank Song

There is hardly anything more beautiful than Madhuri Dixit doing Kathak on-screen. Madhuri fans, cheer up, the dancing diva is back and how. The whole song entirely focuses on Madhuri with none of the other characters.  Entirely choreography based, the song is sure to appeal the lovers of Kathak. It is perhaps a little lighter than ‘Kaahe Chhed Mohey’ but it’s still really beautiful.

    The Music Is Dated

I understand that Kalank is a period movie and it is not a bad idea to bring some ‘old sounds’ to kick the drama a notch higher. Perhaps this is the same approach that went into the making of the song, but sadly the sound and the melody, instead of evoking dramatic nostalgia, falls flat and sounds incredibly dated.

    Lyrics Are Too Cheesy

Tabah Ho Gaye: Even Madhuri’s Kathak Can’t Hide The Stale Devdas Hangover In The New Kalank Song

When sad songs go cheesy it becomes a little difficult to digest. The lyrics, ‘tumse juda ho ke hum, tabah ho gaye’, again, does not evoke nostalgia but falls pretty much in a template and feels almost lazy, if not absolutely corny. Variations of the same we have heard just too many times and it is really not standing apart. Lyrics and music combined, the song has no recall value whatsoever.

The Devdas Hangover Seems Too Evident

From the sets to the costume to the formations of the background dancers even, the song feels too close to Devdas’ ‘Maar Daala’. Even Madhuri’s expression in certain places looks exactly the same.
