Trailer Of Nawazuddin Siddique's Thackeray Promises One Of The Best Political Dramas We Have Seen In A While

If Indian politics was ever to be a film, it would probably be the biggest blockbuster on the planet. The dance of democracy in India has given birth to a lot of iconic personalities which make even the filmiest of the heroes of Hindi cinema pale in comparison. While many unique and iconic personalities have graced the Indian politics no one has even come closer to the vibrancy than Bal Thackeray added to it with his colorful personality.

A man who has literally been venerated by an entire state and impacted people throughout the country, Bal Thackeray was a force of nature, a myth almost that was too real to be true. As director Abhijit Panse tries to capture this magnanimous personality on celluloid, we try to assess how the trailer of Thackeray gave us goosebumps.

Nawazuddin Siddique Is A Miracle Of Nature

It is not exactly fresh news that Nawazuddin Siddique’s talent is on a level we cannot even fathom, but as Thackeray Nawaz seems like a miracle of nature.  While the amazing prosthetic job renders the look uncannily accurate, Nawaz’s body language oozes the personality that is akin to Thackeray. From his iconic straight-faced answers to some of the most controversial questions and often accusations to his style of holding his finger up during speeches, Nawaz pulls it off in a manner that only he is capable of. He has even got his Marathi twang down to the pat. We see what he meant when he said that this was one of the hardest roles he has done.

The Feel Of The Era Seems Authentic

The rise of Thackeray in 60s that led to the formation of Shiv Sena is one of the most iconic political events of the country. In a lot of ways, he and his firebrand politics serve as a good case study to understand the socio-political climate of the country in that era. From the trailer, it is evident that the makers have not compromised on the era appropriateness of the film.

Interesting Casting Choices

Apart from  Nawazuddin as Thackeray, the film has an interesting casting. The role of Thackeray’s wife, Mina Thackeray is being essayed by Amrita Rao who is coming back to the screen after a while. The role of the then Home Minister Morarji Desai is being played by Rajesh Khera.

Sure To Court A Ton Of Controversies

Just like the life of Thackeray, the film is also sure to court a ton of controversies. The film embodies the fearlessness of the icon it is paying homage to and his fiery attitude. The film does not skim through the major controversies of his life but instead deals with polarizing incidents like Babri Masjid controversy, the subsequent riots and his involvement in them, barring Morarji Desai from entering Maharashtra, giving precedence to Marathi films over Hindi films in Mumbai and his whole episode with Javed Miandad, the film deals with everything head on. On a very interesting note, the film has not even tried to take a neutral viewpoint on this extremely politically incorrect political personality.

Could Be One Heck Of A Political Drama

The life of Thackeray and his rise to being the epitome of identity politics in India is one compelling tale that can do wonders if handled well. The raw tonality of the trailer coupled with the firebrand spirit that was unique to Thackeray, the film has all the potential to become a seriously gripping political drama that Bollywood has not come up with since Rajneeti perhaps.
