5 Years Of Kapoor And Sons: When Alia Bhatt Revealed Karan Johar Asked Her Not To Sign This Shakun Batra Film

It has been 5 years since Kapoor and Sons, a touching film about a dysfunctional family trying to work through their issues, released on the big screen and gave fans a million reasons to love it. Right from Rishi Kapoor playing an endearing grandfather, Fawad Khan’s non-effeminate gay character which broke stereotypes and the very premise of the film depicting a modern family were just some things that became the talk of the town when this Shakun Batra film released back in 2016.  

Now, It is a well known fact that the makers had a tough time casting an actor to play a homosexual man in the film until Fawad Khan gave his nod. As many as six actors had rejected the part and Karan Johar even revealed that film had once come close to not being made due to this issue. Knowing these casting issues it would therefore come as a surprise that Karan had however discouraged one member of the cast film taking up the offer for the film and no it was not for Fawad’s role.

Alia who played a crucial role in the project starring opposite Sidharth Malhotra had once in an interview revealed the fact that despite having offered the film to her himself, Karan later asked her to bow out.  The actress had told Filmfare on the subject, “Karan asked me not to do Kapoor & Sons. I said, ‘No! I want to do it’. He said, ‘You don’t have enough part in it’.”

The filmmaker who can be credited with discovering the talented actress didn’t think there was enough for Alia to do in the movie but later did come to the realization that he was wrong in dissuading her. “Karan will offer you a film and then he’ll also ask you not to do it in a protective way. Later, he said, ‘I’m sorry, I was wrong, you were right in doing it’,” the actress had added.

This modern family saga was well received by critics and fans alike and we are sure that none of the cast members would have had any regrets especially after seeing all the love it got.
