Anurag Kashyap And 49 Other Celebrities Write To PM Modi Expressing Concern Over ‘Jai Shree Ram’ Becoming A War Cry

In an empowering turn of events, a group of celebrities which include names like Anurag Kashyap, Konkana Sen Sharma, Aparna Sen, Adoor Gopalkrishnan  and 49 more have sent a letter to PM Narendra Modi expressing concern over the holy chant of Jai Shree Ram becoming a war cry in the current atmosphere of the country.

The letter dated 23^rd July says, “Ram is sacred for the majority community, stop defiling the name of Ram.” The letter further goes on to state, “The lynching of Muslims, Dalits and other minorities must be stopped immediately. We were shocked to learn from the NCRB that there have been no less than 840 instances of atrocities against Dalits in the year 2016, and a definite decline in the percentage of convictions. You have criticised such lynchings in Parliament Mr. Prime Minister, but that is not enough! What action has actually been taken against the perpetrators.”

The letter also adds, “Regrettably "Jai Shri Ram" has become a provocative war cry today that leads to law and order problems, and many lynchings take place in its name”

They have also argued, “There is no democracy without dissent. People should not be branded anti-national or urban Naxal and incarcerated because of dissent against the government.”

Apart from the celebrities, eminent personalities such as historian Ramchandra Guha, social activist Binayak Sen, scholar and sociologist Ashish Nandi are also some of the people who have signed the letter.
