The year 2019 has been a great year for Bollywood with several films doing exceptionally well at the box-office. Even in terms of the quality of films and performances, there have been several ones that have been more than satisfactory.

While good performance is always the credit of the actor delivering that performance, sometimes it is the character that has a larger impact on us than the actor or the performance. This year, thankfully, gave us a few of those and these characters have made it to our all-time favorite list of unforgettable characters.

    Moeen Bhai  (Gully Boy)

Played by the unimaginably talented Vijay Varma, Moeen Bhai is one of those characters that comes once in a very long time. Rarely has a character touched such depths of reality in a film. From his relationship with Murad to his moral compass, everything about this character is uniquely layered yet so graspable that the blend is almost intoxicating. From his Bambaiyaa slang to his attempt at rap, Moeen Bhai shall forever really close to our hearts.

    Mc Sher ( Gully Boy)

It is almost surreal that this was Siddhant Chaturvedi was making his film debut with a character as fine-tuned as MC Sher. As Murad’s closest aide and mentor, the character had an underlying vulnerability that could only be viewed from the fine cracks of his exterior dripping with swag. An innocence and spirit that is the biggest asset of any true asset, MC Sher’s big smile when he realizes that it is Murad and not him who has qualified for the next round is one still that would be etched in our memories.

    Sexa ( Chhichhore)

If you have lived in a hostel for any period of time, you would understand why Sexa played by Varun Sharma is such a special character. Rarely has Bollywood come up with a character who has so much integrity for his ‘tharak’ and yet manage to come across as lovable and not entirely creepy.  Just for this fine balance alone, Sexa deserves a place in the hall of fame.

    Tracker ( Laal Kaptaan)

Trust Deepak Dobriyal to breathe life into any character but as the nameless tracker in Laal Kaptaan, he surely had lot of meat to sink his teeth into. Twisted, wacky and weirdly devoted to his dogs Dukhiram and Sukhiram, you never quite decipher the character and in this mystery lies the beauty of it.

Jimmy (Mard Ko Dard Nahin Hota)

We have seen cliche mental villains in 1000 Hindi films perhaps but it took us a Gulshan Devaiah to make us realize the strength of stereotypes. The effortlessness with which he plays the ‘cliche’ is so deliciously wacky that you don’t know if you want to laugh at his antics or be see him for the pure evil that he is. Thankfully, we never had to chose because Jimmy made the journey so much fun we never really cared about the destination.

    Jatav ( Article 15)

In a film as complex and finely balanced as Article 15, it takes someone as capable as Kumud Mishra to make a mark. His inspector Jatav is a man whose roots are firmly in reality but yet in the rot of every humane quality around him his ability to hold on to last shreds of his conscience is remarkable. He is as much a part of the system and has forever been comfortable in that space, but he is the only one who reigns supreme in the gray area in a film where the white and black are so stark.
