Before De De Pyaar De, These Films In Bollywood Also Talked About Major Age-Gap In Relationships

For ages, Bollywood has been the common definition of romance and relationships. With time, as the definition and limitations of relationship changes, Bollywood has also tried to update its version and tried to come up with stories that explore different angles of love and relationship.

 Ajay Devgn’s De De Pyaar De is attempting to do the same with age gaps in relationship. It is becoming increasingly common where age gaps in a relationship are no more a barrier. However, this is not the first time Bollywood is dealing with the concept. Before De De Pyaar De, these films in Bollywood also talked about major age gap in relationships.

Nishabd

Loosely based on Lolita, Nishabd is one of the boldest films on this topic. It also created quite the buzz as it was Amitabh Bachchan who was exploring this unchartered territory. In the film, Bachchan falls in love with Jiah Khan who is actually his daughter’s friend. Although, the film received mixed reviews, it truly initiated a conversation about the supposed taboo topic.

Cheeni Kum

Yet again, Amitabh Bachchan was in the focus of a love-story where age gap was the issue. Amitabh and Tabu’s sensitive portrayal and easy chemistry made this film a pleasant watch that took a serious yet light hearted take on the issue.

Lamhe

Long before Nishabd and Cheeni Kum shaked our sensibilities, Sridevi and Anil Kapoor made a seriously ahead of time effort in the same direction with Lamhe. In the film, Sridevi falls in love with the man who was once in love with her mother. One has to watch the film to believe its brilliance.

Dil Chahta Hai

The film is credited for bringing coming of age stories and buddy bonding films into Vogue, but the film also explored many facets of relationships. Dimple Kapadia and Akshay Khanna made a bold statement with their roles where a divorced, middle aged single mother falls in love with a much younger Akshaye Khanna.

Leela

Before Dil Chahta Hai, Dimple played a somewhat similar role in this less popular gem of a film. She played a middle aged college professor who falls for a student. The film had its artistry and sensibility in place and gave a superb take on relationships with major age gaps.
