Dilip Kumar and Saira Banu’s marriage was one of the most lasting ones in Bollywood that endured the test of time and many ups and downs. The couple, however, had decided not to have any kids of their own after the veteran actress’s pregnancy went wrong in 1972.

Saira Babu had in an interview once said that if the couple ever had a boy, he would have looked like Shah Rukh Khan. The actress saw many similarities between Shah Rukh and Dilip Kumar. Shah Rukh Khan’s maiden project with Hema Malini, Dil Ashna Hai had its ceremonial clap given by the veteran actor. It is where they had first met Shah Rukh.

The veteran actress had said in an interview with Mumbai Mirror a few years ago, "Dilip saab gave the ceremonial clap. I have always said that if we had a son, he might have looked like Shah Rukh.”

She had further added, "Both he and saab are a lot alike and have similar hair, which is why I like to run my fingers through Shah Rukh Khan when we meet. This time he asked me, 'Aaaj aap mere baalon ko haath nahin laga rahi hain?' I was happy to."

In his autobiography, Dilip Kumar had revealed that they had conceived a baby in 1972 but the actress had high blood pressure during her eighth month of the pregnancy and they lost the baby which they later found out was a boy.

The couple was happy in their marriage and never lamented their decision to not have children. The late actor was happy to see the many actors he had inspired in Bollywood carrying forward his legacy and enjoying the company of his many nieces and nephews.

Dilip Kumar breathed his last on Wednesday morning. He is survived by his wife Saira Banu.
