Digangana On Nepotism Debate Around Sushant's Death

Exclusive: Digangana Suryavanshi Says It Was Sushant’s Life And Decision, Cannot Form An Opinion About It

Digangana Suryavanshi has been a popular name on Indian TV since a young age before she moved on to star in films. The actress who will next be seen in The Battle Of Bheema Koregaon and the Telugu film Seetimaar spoke to us at length about Sushant Singh Rajput and nepotism reflecting on how the actor's death has people jumping to conclusions without anyone knowing what led him to end his own life and whether the film industry had a role to play.

She says everyone has been affected by Sushant’s death and that for someone to be moved by an event of this sort, it is not necessary for him or her to be from Bollywood. Digangana feels that no one is in a capacity to predict what actually drove the actor to such an extreme. “I cannot really form an opinion about it because this is about somebody’s life, somebody’s decision, I have no idea what was going on in that guy’s mind. I don’t think any of us are in complete capacity to predict that. It is completely unfair to say somebody knew what happened. There is one thing that has happened, the real incident, it is definitely very sad but there are so many things that come along with it, people, their opinion, trolls, real solid opinions that force you to think in one direction.”

The actress went on to state that blaming Bollywood for a standalone incident such as this one isn’t the right way to look at it and it and when talking about mental health issues one cannot limit themselves to the film industry. “I started working when I was very young but never did I feel that this industry doesn’t belong to me. I understand different people have different struggles, different hardships but that is a part of life. To exclude or include an entire industry because of a perception isn’t correct. Are we saying the people who do a normal job, don’t go through a crisis situation? Or they don’t feel like a waste? That isn’t the case. We are all human beings. There is something that we are capable of, there are things that we are not capable of. I am genuinely upset at how this turned out to be.”

Touching upon the insider versus outsider debate Digangana shared, “I haven’t been able to understand the insider and outsider phenomenon. When you start something new whether it is delving into films or TV, there always will be people who are far more experienced, people who had invested a certain amount of time and energy into their job.”

“I had my hardships of being a newbie because people underestimate everybody.  It is not about the job that you are doing, it comes from the fact that you have just recently started. When it comes to movies, there are people who have been doing these jobs for generations and you cannot take their lifestyle and experience away, you cannot take away the fact that’s all they have probably spoken about in their life. I have chosen to know it all from the beginning. To be accepted it comes from your job,” she added.

Talking about ‘outsiders’ like Sridevi, Shah Rukh Khan, and Akshay Kumar the actress feels that there’s a balance of insiders and outsiders in the industry. “Just because one person wasn’t able to make it, you blame the other side completely is incorrect. I am not saying it [nepotism] doesn’t exist, it does, but that doesn’t weaken anybody else. We cannot put the gun on someone else’s shoulder and shoot, because that in life will never make you a good shooter, if you have got to shoot, you have to take that gun yourself and shoot. We all fall, I feel upset so many times. We do lose our temperaments, we feel, there are so many who are not capable enough and still are in a better position and that feels wrong,” she concluded.
