EXCLUSIVE: Imtiaz Ali Reveals His Brother, ‘She’ Director Arif Ali Always Criticises His Work

Netflix’s new web show titled ‘she’ is a crime drama that has been created and written by Imtiaz Ali and it has been directed by Arif Ali and Avinash Das. The series features Aditi Pohankar and Vijay Varma in the lead roles.

It is worth noting here that along with Imtiaz Ali who is quite prominent in the Bollywood filmmaking space. His brothers Sajid Ali and Arif Ali too are into directing films. Well, yes, for the uninitiated, Arif Ali has directed a film called Lekar Hum Deewaana Dil that featured Armaan Jain in the lead and Sajid directed the more recent Laila Majnu.

It was during an exclusive chat with Imtiaz and his brother Arif (who has directed the Netflix series ‘She’) that we at Desimartini asked them about the psychological hazards that become common when all three brothers are from the same industry and all the three of them are filmmakers. We asked them whether there is any pressure on the ‘mind’ level.

Arif was quick to respond stating there surely is but it is not about competition between the brothers but about doing good work. Quipped he, “There is good pressure, there is no competition pressure because the pressure is to do good work and come up with good ideas. This is a great thing that all three of us are in the industry and are working here because we always keep getting an honest opinion at every stage of execution.”

On being asked how often does the criticism happen, Arif asserted, “absolutely” Imtiaz pitched in and revealed, “He criticises me all the time, I am the one to appreciate his work more.”

Arif concluded saying, “It happens with every film and also after the film is over.”
