EXCLUSIVE: Section 377 Verdict: Director Onir calls it a great day for democracy; Bobby Darling Rejoices

The supreme court has almost made it a point to obliterate anything regressive, provide speedy judgements instead of delaying things, and the face of Indian judiciary has changed for the better. In another landmark judgement today, the apex court of India unanimously decriminalised section article 377. The whole nation triumphed when the news was announced and couldn't stop lauding SC's decision which was headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra. He said, "LGBT Community has same rights as of any ordinary citizen. Respect for individual choice is the essence of liberty; the LGBT community possesses equal rights under the constitution. Criminalising gay sex is irrational and indefensible."

Desimartini.com got in touch with acclaimed director Onir to understand his stance towards the judgement. Onir has always been upfront as far as his sexuality is concerned he has never shied away from addressing issues that pertained to homosexuality even through his films.

The director who is extremely happy with the Supreme court’s decision feels that it was high time for the judgement to be passed. Quipped he, “It has been a long wait. I feel very empowered professionally and personally, because it’s not the end of the road, it is the beginning of the journey towards civil rights and inclusion. It’s is a great day for democracy in India because the supreme court has reinstated basics that the constitution has guaranteed to every citizen. It is something that will send signals across the country that sexual orientation between two consenting adults is no body’s business. It is a big blow to all the lies that are told about nature, history science, every possible regressive idea. The supreme court has erased all that. It will be a journey now especially because of unspoken discrimination that is so much rampant.

Even before this ruling, people were indulging in same sex activities and some men who disguise themselves as straight have even forcefully sodomised other men, that too is rape (homosexual innature). Most men do not reallyhave the guts to speak about it in the open for the fear of judgement and the perpetrators get away with their crime and continue putting up a garb of being straight! Onir feels any rape (be it of a man or a woman) is rape. He asserts, “Now that the homosexual act between two consenting adults is no more a crime, any case of forceful sexual intercourse should be treated as rape, irrespective of gender. They should all be treated equally. There will be people who will not talk about it and there will always be people who will be vocal about it.

When We contacted Bobby Darling to know what she felt about the decision, she mentioned, “It is a great step taken by the Supreme court but one should always keep in mind that this is about consenting adults, anything forceful should be termed rape. She also feels that now that the Supreme court has come out with a ruling that favours two consenting males engaging in a sexual act, there will be many celebrities from the film and television industry who will now come out in the open.

While we know about some of them for sure, we wonde3r who the others are she is hinting at. Well, time shall speak As of now it is time to revel in the rainbow colours of gender equality and liberation.
