EXCLUSIVE: Shah Rukh Khan Reveals Two Factors He Considers Before Choosing The Film He Will Be Part Of

It has been a long time since the last release of Shah Rukh Khan hit the screens. Well, Zero released in December 2018 and it has been more than a year since. There have been so many speculations about what will SRK do next. Sometimes it is Netflix and sometimes it is some action film with some south director. But, has the Baadshah of Bollywood confirmed anything yet with an official statement or a video announcement? NO!

The reason behind this delay is something that is (perhaps) personal to him. Something we don’t really want to get into. It is his decision; it is his film and it is a lot of his own investment. We as audiences will just be happy with the end product.

However, what makes us think is the difference in the kind of scripts he chooses to be part of. There were times of Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa, Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman, Deewana there were times of Baazigar, times of Anjaam, Darr, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jaayenge then came Dil To Pagal Hai, Devdas, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai thereafter, Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Veer Zaara, Chak De India so on and so forth. These were times when Shah Rukh Khan was reigning supreme. (Well, he still is for sure!) What I am trying to drive at is, not that this era didn’t see him faltering – there were films like Ram Jaane, Chaahat, Koyla, Duplicate, Achanak, Josh so on and so forth which were duds. But what’s noteworthy is in spite of these gaffes, in the mind of the audiences, he was always on top! It was very psychological.

So, what went wrong all of a sudden? Films like FAN, Jab Harry Met Sejal, ZERO were all flops at the box-office. Is it the kind of scripts he is choosing? Or is it the advice he keeps getting from the people who are in his close proximity? I surely wouldn’t know about the latter but I did try to decipher what goes on in his mind before he says yes to a script.

In an EXCLUSIVE chat with us, he revealed, there is no conscious way on his part to figure out the kind of scripts that he chooses to be part of and that all films, kind of denotes the change in time. Quipped he, “There is no conscious decision for me to choose the films I do. All films are a sign of times. All films are done by different directors at different times so you had the Aditya Chopras and Karan Johars at one time, Bhatt Saab (Mahesh Bhatt) before that, Rahul Rawail and Ramesh Sippy… all these wonderful directors that I worked with. Then has come a phase of some of the directors who made films like Dilwale and all these films where… Also, what happens to me is, I have done a certain kind of films and haven’t done a certain kind of films".

He went on to stress how important it is for the actor in him to experiment with roles as they are ‘new’ for him. "For me to do an action film in a very typical zone is something new. As an actor it is important for me that I should have been a super-hero (Ra-One) one day, should have been a FAN one day, I should be a ZERO one day, I should be a hero one day. I should be a comic character one day and I have always kept it like that. If I wasn’t like that, perhaps I wouldn’t have done a Baazigar, I wouldn’t have done a Darr, I wouldn’t have done a Kabhi Haa Kabhi Naa, I wouldn’t have done a Chak De India, I wouldn’t have done a Swades.”

He further contended, there are two factors he keeps in mind while choosing a script. “At any given point in time, two considerations go into doing a film. First, Am I happy and comfortable in this zone of filmmaking because I feel that way? Second, the people who are making it, are they going to make me happy or are they just going to do it as a proposal, so more often than not when I have fallen trap to a proposal it hasn’t worked out, neither for the film nor for me. Sometimes, some very good feeling films have also not worked but that’s alright because I enjoyed the process. I try to choose a film where the process is going to be enjoyable and hopefully the results will follow.”

Well, we sure understand his psychology and we hope this thought process helps him in culling out the best scripts for him in the future and he springs back to the position he always belonged to!
