Asha Bhosle has been one of the most celebrated singers of our times. She is a versatile singer in every true sense of the word. She has sung in multiple languages, with numerous music directors and the best part and at the same time the surprising part is she managed to make the style of every music director her own. From singing devotional songs to foot-tapping and seductive cabaret numbers, from soulful ghazals to giving her voice to peppy romantic songs she has been there, done that.

The singer has received multiple awards over the years and most recently, she was honored with an honorary Doctorate from the University of Salford, Manchester.

That was when Desimartini.com caught up with her and she spoke her heart out about the condition of music in our country as of today. Speaking of the change in the music industry and the playback style these days, she feels nothing is the same and it has all changed for the worse. Quipped she, “The singers of yore aren’t there, the music directors are not there, those writers are not there, the very style of recording that used to be in our times is not there anymore. Now, the singers have to just put on the headphone and the song will be played in it and they just have to sing 2 to 3 lines of the song in a go! The song ceases to have any meaning whatsoever. There is no feeling left in the song, the song is devoid of meat. The way we used to sing for 3 to four minutes at a go required a certain amount of vocal strength, we used to feel the lyrics, it would actually come automatically. Now the songs are no more songs and nothing is from the heart anymore.”

We understand what it feels to sing the entire song at a go with more than a hundred musicians playing at the same time, it requires coordination, it requires absolute perfection and achieving that surely is a task these days, thanks to technology and the ease it has imparted to things that were complicated at a time. But what is to be deliberated is, those complications actually brought out the best in everyone which unfortunately is not the case today!
