Exclusive: Sunidhi Chauhan Feels There's Enough Opportunity For New Talent In The Music Industry, Calls Remixes The 'Safe Bet'

Sunidhi Chauhan is hands down one of the best singers that the nation has seen. She had begun her career from the age of 16 and is still ruling the industry and how. Even though she has often been called the 'queen of item songs', she has proven her versatility with soul-soothing numbers too. In fact, recently, she released a new single called Kuch Khwaab for which she collaborated with Daboo Malik. The independent song has already been garnering appreciation from all over. In a candid conversation with us, Sunidhi Chauhan opened up about the difficulty in making the song, about her equation with Daboo Malik, and about whether the new talents get enough exposure in the industry:

It was absolutely delightful to hear your new song, especially since it's very different from the songs we have generally heard you sing. How was the song conceived? What was it like collaborating with Daboo Malik?

I received a call from Dabooji after a long time. We had met a couple of times, but there wasn’t any mention of doing a song. He suddenly said that he had a song, which was close to him and I just jumped at the opportunity. He sent the song and I completely fell in love with it.
I have known Dabooji for over 20 years. He has seen me as a child. We have spent so much time together. Apart from the fact that he is a fantastic music director, I have always been fond of his personality. He is so straight-forward and keeps his heart on his sleeves. At the same time, he is jovial, fun, loving, and caring. I am just glad that I have known him and have worked with him after so long.

We have been in a long lockdown. How has it been for you, especially with a kid at home?

Lockdown in a way has been a blessing to me. I have spent time with myself. Of course, I have spent more time with my family, especially my son at home. At home with him has been memorable. What could be better for a child than having both his parents at home? We try to work in between. Work was still on and it was difficult to find time but it happened. He is a good child. The lockdown has taught me patience and the fact that eventually everything just turns out to be fine. I have also learnt how to cook! It’s been a good time.

You have been a part of the music industry from a very young age. How do you think the industry has evolved when it comes to welcoming new talent since?

There are enough platforms now. There are enough talent and a lot of new musicians who are getting opportunities. This is a very good time for them. Today, when you have platforms like YouTube where you can put your own music, and everyone in the world can watch it if they want to. Whoever is actually good will take the cake, will land the big opportunity but there’s a platform for each and everyone to come and show their skills.

This might sound generic, but what's your take on remixes? With the lockdown, do you think we will have more original music?

(Laughs)With the lockdown, I don’t know how much of it will change but we definitely should have more of originals, if not all. Today, unfortunately, we are seeing a lot of remixes, which is okay, but original music has to have that support. It the root, it shouldn’t be wiped out. Remixes are good only when done tastefully. If we remix every song, it will get boring. It is also a safe bet! When someone in the music industry has come up with something from their heart and took that risk, it has reached people. We shouldn’t play safe all the time.
