Family Day: The Dysfunctional On-Screen Families Of Bollywood We Fell In Love With

Every year, May 15th is observed as the International Day of Families. But what is a family? Well, that’s a complicated question and each one of us can come up with many different definitions. But it basically comes down to a group of loved ones who are there with you through thick and thin, a home where you get the sense of belongingness. Yes, we sometimes fight amongst each other and there are times when we can’t stand one another! But in the end, the question remains – can we count on them? And the answer is ‘yes’.

Family Day: The Dysfunctional On-Screen Families Of Bollywood We Fell In Love With

So this year on the International Day of Families, let’s a take a look at some of the most dysfunctional on-screen families of Bollywood, which aren’t too good to be true but still won our hearts, because they were there for each other.

    1. Kapoor & Sons:

They had their differences, they had their issues and there were many secrets. The brothers didn’t get along and the parents had a troubled marriage, but in the end they came back together when their grandfather, played by Rishi Kapoor, sent them a special video message telling them how lonely he feels. The movie ends with an almost happy family photograph which left us with tears in our eyes.

    2. Dil Dhadakne Do:

The Mehras are millionaires and the kind of people who prefer brushing their problems under the carpet instead of talking about them. In fact, they kept so many secrets from each other that the only character who had enough clarity to narrate the story was their dog Pluto! Nevertheless, at the end of the film when Ranveer Singh asks his father: ‘Papa kya main aap pe bharosa kar sakta hun?’, his on-screen daddy Anil Kapoor replies, ‘Haan’. While Ranveer jumps off the ship to go back to the love of his life, his family comes to his recue like his ‘lifeboat’.

    3. Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan:

While some fans feel that the film followed the love story of a homosexual couple, we feel that it actually follows a family’s journey to acceptance. Yes, Ayushmann Khurrana and Jitendra Kumar have portrayed the characters of two gay men who are madly in love. But the story is about how their family finally understands their relationship and accepts it. Every single character in the film is very different from each other and most of them don’t see eye to eye on some discussions. But in the end, they are a family who are happier and stronger united.

    4. Kabhi Kushi Kabhie Gham:

Once again, the road to acceptance. Because that’s what a family does! Amitabh Bachchan’s character was not happy about Shah Rukh Khan marrying Kajol, but SRK had his reasons (and also he was in love). In the end, the father-son duo’s love for each other turned out to be stronger than their stubborn attitudes. They kept it all aside and reunited. It proves that even though you make mistakes or sometimes misunderstand each other, family will always be there for you to fall back on. Even it means waiting for a while.

    5. Hum Saath Saath Hain:

Initially most of us thought- ‘Wow what a perfect family!’ The kids loved their parents more than anything else in the world and almost never said ‘no’ to any of their wishes. But they did get separated and their happily ever after was messed up when the ‘aunties’ tried to create misunderstandings. But that happens right? Misunderstandings do take place when such different people live together. Nevertheless, their love for one another and trust on each other was far greater than all of this. They did get back together, leaving us super duper emotional!

In the end, it doesn’t matter if you fight or have problems with each other. All that can be sorted out with a clear mind. What matters is this – they are there when you need them! So celebrate your family today, tomorrow and every single day.
