Family Of Thakurganj Review: The Sloppy Writing And Bad Direction Marred The Performance Of The Actors!

    Film: Family Of Thakurganj

    Director: Manoj K Jha

Cast: Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahie Gill, Nandish Sandhu, Supriya Pilgaonkar, Saurabh Shukla, Pavan Malhotra, Yashpal Sharma

Rating: 2 out of 5 Stars

My Verdict: A Tight Script And A Better Direction Could Have Salvaged The Film; The funniest Were The Character Names!

The film tells the story of two brothers Nunnu and Munnu and how their childhood is taken away from them overnight with the death of their father. Jimmy Sheirgill’s Nunnu suddenly realises that he has to take care of his family now and all he needs to do that right is by earning money. The way he would earn the money didn’t count to him and gradually he started climbing the ladder of wealth and at the same time his initiation into the world of crime happened!

Nunnu’s wife Sharbati played by Mahie Gill is also an adept extortion business runner. In fact, she provides advice to her husband to effectively run their business and not to be soft-hearted in his dealings! The only saving grace in this drama is Nunnu’s younger brother Munnu played by Nandish Sandhu. He loves his elder brother and is apprehensive of the repercussions of his duplicitousness. He strongly condemns his brother’s actions. What finally awaits the family forms the crux of the film!

While the plot is flimsy and isn’t strong enough, the writing and the extremely weak screenplay mar it all the more. There are characters being introduced left, right and centre and the worst part is the establishment of the scenes isn’t there at all, therefore, it gets a tab bit difficult for the viewer to understand what is going on. Things just seem to happen haphazardly. There are some characters in the film who don’t even have a proper graph. I ended up wondering what was the reason that they were there in the first place. Anchor and actor Salil Acharya’s character for instance – Salil plays Baba Bhandari’s (Saurabh Shukla) son-in-law. It seemed that his character in the film was there just to be slapped time and again by his father-in-law! Pranati Rai Prakash plays Suman and happens to be Munnu’s love interest – her character too had no reason to be there, it was just there – maybe just to incorporate a girl’s character in the guy’s life! Nothing concrete!

Having said that, the film does have some really good performances by Jimmy Sheirgill and Mahie Gill. Both of them very convincingly played their parts. They are good actors and so are Saurabh Shukla, Yashpal Sharma, Pavan Malhotra, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Raj Zutshi but their performances were let down and how by the sloppy screenplay! Nandish Singh surprisingly had a chunky role to play in the film but unfortunately, he couldn’t do much justice to it. He did shine in some scenes but in most others, his facial expressions just couldn’t hold together.

There was nothing commendable about the cinematography, the soundtrack in the film was trying its best to hold the entire narrative together and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to state that it was a decent job done.

Even though the ending was with a twist that many will not be able to fathom, it was too late to salvage the film by then and the length could have been shortened just a wee bit!
