Gangubai Kathiawadi: Mumbai Court Dismisses Plea Against Sanjay Leela Bhansali By Gangubai’s Adopted Son

Some weeks back, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi had run into troubles. A plea was filed against the film, and against Hussain Zaidi’s Book ‘The Mafia Queens Of Mumbai’ from which the film has been adapted, by Gangubai’s adopted son Babuji Rawji Shah. However, a civil court in Mumbai has now dismissed the plea.

Babuji Rawji Shah had appealed to a Mumbai Civil Court seeking restraining order against its publishing, selling and creating third party rights of The Mafia Queens of Mumbai. He has also sought a permanent injunction against Bhansali from producing, directing or airing any promo of the movie. The court has now dismissed the plea. Now, Shah wants to appeal to the High Court. His legal representative told Mid Day, “We will take the appeal to a higher court. The movie is still in the making. The [defendants] claim that Shah’s right to object [to the book] expired in 2015. We have also filed a criminal suit for defamation that will be heard on March 1. The story is bogus. The book claims that she was a sex worker, running a brothel and was apparently raped by one of the gang members of Karim Lala. She has been portrayed as a female don. Shah had no knowledge of the book. Prior to 2011, there is no public document of her running a brothel. There is no FIR against her. She was a social activist who worked for women empowerment. She had no criminal links at all.”

The shoot of the film is almost over. Now, it has been reported that Ajay Devgn, who would play Karim Lala, requires to shoot his portion and would fit the dates in between Maidaan. We wonder whether we would at all be able to see the film, but hope that the legal problem is sorted.
