Kangana Ranaut and Hansal Mehta’s only collaboration Simran turned out to be a distressing experience for the filmmaker for more reasons than one. Not only did the film invite controversy after Apurva Asrani and the actress got into a rather mucky controversy over the script credits but it also turned out to be a big box office dud which made things difficult for the filmmaker who now feels that he shouldn’t have made the film.

Shedding light on all the troubles that the film caused him, Hansal told Huffington Post, “I mean, I sometimes wish I never made it. There was no need. It was an unnecessary aberration in my career. It makes me sad, it could’ve been a much better film. It had the potential to be a great film. It used to sadden me but now it’s … It was a painful time. Every day. Beyond that, it’s difficult to speak about it. I don’t even revisit it. There was a time after the film released, I went through a very low phase mentally. Took therapy. The film affected my mental health. I went into a shell, I did not want to meet people. I was in a period of very low self-esteem. Omerta also came and it went, it didn’t help me heal. I realised you can’t depend on one film to heal the wounds of the other. You have to heal yourself.”

The filmmaker admits that Kangana did take charge on set and began directing other actors but other than that they had a well time hanging out. Drawing a contrast between spending time with the actress on set and off the set Hansal says, “I’ll be honest with you, I enjoyed Kangana’s company outside the set and I had a great time with her. We used to go out and she would always ask me to choose restaurants. We’d have a great meal together, party together, I would choose good wine, all that was fun.”

Talking about the issues on set and the financial trouble he ran into because of Simran he added, “It went out of my control completely. That’s not a happy situation to be in. Other than dealing with the fact that she completely took charge of the set and began directing other actors, I lost a lot of money too. Which had nothing to do with her. Financially it hit me badly.”

Hansal Mehta admits that even though he’s not spoken to Kangana in a long time there’s no bad blood between them due to Simran and said that everything apart she is a good actor.
