    As 2019 picks up in Bollywood, it is a good time to take a look at what the year has in store for us. Like every year, this year also Salman Khan will keep his Eid release tradition alive. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, this year’s Eid release Bharat has already garnered a crazy fan base like every other Bhai film.

The film, although not an official remake, is inspired by the Korean film ‘Ode To My Father’. Even though the Salman Khan starrer is not going to be the exact same movie, knowing the story of Korean film might give us a little bit direction is terms of what to expect from the film.

    The Korean film, Ode To My Father starts during the at the Hungnam Evacuation which happened in 1950 during the Korea War. As Koreans are being transported to what would later become South Korea, a young boy Deok-soo loses her sister Mak-soon in the crowd.  The family moves to Busan where Deok-soo’s aunt runs a store that sells imported goods. However, Deok-soo’s father stays back in Hungnam to look for his lost daughter and makes a young Deok-soo promise that he will take the entire responsibility of the family as the elder son.

    Once in Busan, Deok-soo starts doing odd jobs at a very young age to provide for the family. During 1960, Deok-soo along with his best friend Dal-goo migrates to Germany to work in the mines. There he meets and falls in love with another migrant worker Young-ja. After a mining accident and the expiration of his visa, he returns to Busan. However, a few months later Young-ja comes to Korea and announces that she is pregnant. The two get married and start a new life and eventually become parents to two kids.

    A few years pass and Deok-soo’s aunt dies and his uncle wants to sell the store which is losing money. However, Deok-soo vehemently opposes the decision. In order to fulfill his sister’s wife for a nice wedding, he again leaves Korea, this time to work in war-torn Vietnam. Young-ja tries to stop her but he along with his trusted friend Dal-goo. Young-ja’s fears are realized when he comes back lame after trying to rescue people from Vietcong.

    After coming back to Korea again, he again keeps working at the store when a television program broadcasts a program where they try to unite South and North Korean relatives who were separated during the partition. The showrunners contact Deok-soo saying that there is an elderly man in Hungnam province who might be his father. However, it is finally revealed that the man is not ultimately his estranged father. The family is distraught when the show contacts them again saying that there is a woman who might be Mak-soon. Deok-soon talks to the woman on the show and it turns out that she is indeed Mak-soon.  A tearful reunion ensues finally. However, Deok-soon’s mother passes away soon after.

    Finally, in the present day, Deok-soon finally agrees to sell the store that he has protected all his life vehemently. A flashback shows that his father said that the family will unite at the store and thus Deok-soon have been holding on to the store so dearly. After the store is sold, Deok-soon tells Young-ja that he finally decided to sell the store saying his father, even if alive, would be too old to come and unite with the family at the store.
