Here Is Why Gully Boy Is Going To Be A Norm Breaker In Every Possible Sense Of The Term
Ever since the trailer announcement of the film hit the internet. Gully Boy has become the film that everyone is talking about. Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy brings Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in an avatar that none of us could ever imagine.
The trailer and three songs later, it is almost evident that the performances in the film are going to be nothing short of epic and the story have also got us all fascinated. But what really justifies the massive buzz around the film is the fact that it is a norm breaker in every sense of the term. Here is what we are talking about.
The Story
As most people know by now, that Gully Boy is not a biopic on India’s hip hop artist Divini or Naezy. However, the story is greatly inspired by them. There has been a lot of films in Bollywood that has dealt with the journey of an artist from rags to riches. But Gully Boy is surely so much more than that. The story of a rap artist originating in the slum of Mumbai and the as the rap suggests ‘the volcano of his words breaking the shackles’ is nothing like anything mainstream Bollywood has done, at least in the living memory.
Badass Alia
When was the last time you saw a young, spunky and totally badass character in a hijab? Alia’s character in the film, Safina, is refreshing in so many ways. From her sass and swagger to her relationship with Ranveer’s character in the film, nothing is like any role that has been written for young Muslim girls from streets of the city, in Bollywood before.
Promotional Strategy
Given the youth appeal of the film, the makers have also opted for a unique promotional strategy. The trailer announcement was a masterstroke to begin and then the hip-hop music concert at the launch of the music of the film just knocked the ball out of the park.
The Music
The most unique thing about Gully Boy is its music. If we leave the Punjabi hip-hop which is ‘one of a kind’ the art of rapping, hip-hop or beat-boxing is yet to catch up in India, at least in a more mainstream way. When the rap claims, ‘Asli hip-hop se milaye Hindustan ko’, they are not making tall claims, in fact, they are doing exactly that.
Ranveer Singh’s Vocals
From Shah Rukh to Salman to even Hrithik and Aamir, many heroes in Bollywood has sung or rapped a little in their films. But apart from Farhan Akhtar, who is also known to be a professional singer, no one has really gone to the extent of recording almost the entire album of the film. Given Divine and Naezy has been closely involved with the project, it was very easy for them to make them do the playback. But instead, in another norm-breaking gesture, it is Ranveer who has himself rapped for the film in his own voice.
