Imtiaz Ali says he'd make the ending of Rockstar more tragic if he could change it today, comments on the possibility of a sequel

Imtiaz Ali and Ranbir Kapoor’s debut collaboration Rockstar has completed a decade since release and yet the music and performances that appealed blew the audience over in 2011 still remains the talk of the town. While Ranbir came to be loved as Jordan in this tragic love story, Imtiaz Ali has now revealed that he had been trying to make the film since even before Ranbir became an actor.

Needless to say, the filmmaker had tried casting other actors before finally finding the Rockstar he was looking for in Ranbir. Talking to Hindustan Times about the movie completing a decade the filmmaker said, “I began trying to make Rockstar even before Ranbir became an actor. So, I was thinking of other actors to play this part. When I met Ranbir, he strangely knew the story of Rockstar. When he began telling me the story, I saw Jordan in him.”

Rockstar is the story of a college-going guy who wants to make it big in the world of music. While he toils to find his inspiration, he ends up with a broken heart which gives soul to his music and helps him climb ladders of success but feels him feeling shattered and empty. Imtiaz spoke about the tragic ending of the film and told the publication that if he were to reconsider the ending he’d make it even more tragic and firmly believes that it had to be that way.

Imtiaz further addressed the demands of a sequel to Rockstar and nipped all hopes on that front saying that it is highly unlikely to happen. “There has been a lot of demand for a sequel to the film and sometimes, we just mention it among ourselves, mostly as something to talk about but there has never been a serious plan to make a sequel. Long back I had said that if we go into making a sequel, it should only be ten years later in the life of Jordan. Though a decade has passed, there is really no plan.”

The makers and cast of Rockstar had a virtual reunion recently on the occasion of the film’s 10th anniversary. Actress Sanjana Sanghi who made her debut in the project shared a screenshot from the impromptu get together with a  special message revealing how reliving the memories of working to the film left her with lump in her throat.
