Jaya Bachchan today took up the cause of the entertainment industry in the Rajya Sabha and made an appeal to the government to support the industry that is crumbling economically and whose image is being tarnished in the media because of a ‘few people’.

The veteran actress spoke assertively not only about the economic situation the industry is facing but also about all the negativity surrounding it these days. “In order to divert the attention of the people we are being used and flogged by the social media, and the government’s non support. People who have made their name in this film industry have called it a gutter. I really disagree and I hope the government tells these people who have earned their earnings, name and fame in this industry to stop using such language. There are people in the film industry who are some of the highest tax payers, they are still being harassed. All kinds of promises are being made to the entertainment industry but never ever kept.” She said.

Jaya forwarded her argument adding that Bollywood celebrities have always had the government’s back. “The entertainment industry always comes forward to help the government in whatever good work the government takes up. They come and speak for them, support them, when there is a national calamity they come forward, give their money. I think the government must support this industry and not kill it. A few people cannot tarnish the image of the industry.”

The actress may not have named anyone in her appeal for government support, but Kangana Ranaut who has been at the center of many controversies in Bollywood and politics lately, fearlessly responded to Jaya’s speech in a tweet questioning if her appeal would be that same if her kids Shweta or Abhishek complained about being harassed.

Kangana in her tweet wrote, “Jaya ji would you say the same thing if in my place it was your daughter Shweta beaten, drugged and molested as a teenage, would you say the same thing if Abhieshek complained about bullying and harassment constantly and found hanging one day? Show compassion for us also.”

Apart from Kangana, Jaya Bachchan's Rajaya Sabha speech has been seeing support from other Bollywood celebrities like Taapsee Pannu and Anubhav Sinha.
