The audience have given their verdict and now Kabir Singh is the second highest grosser of the year with a total box-office collection of Rs. 218 crores.  But despite causing the box-office storm that it did, the film has been lambasted by a large section of the audience and especially critics have critiqued the film in strong words for its misogyny and toxic masculinity.

In a recent interview given to senior film critic Anupama Chopra, director Sandeep Reddy Vanga attempted to defend these allegations.  Vanga said, “When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there.”

He also went on to slam the critics who criticized the film and called them ‘parasites who are the real threat to the film industry’ and opined that ‘probably they had never experienced love the right way.’

Talking about the particular scenes that created an uproar, Sandeep reasoned, “She slapped him without a reason, at least Kabir had a reason to slap her. If you can’t slap, if you can’t touch your woman wherever you want, if you can’t kiss, I don’t see emotions there.”

The director also went after another senior film critic Rajeev Masand and called him ‘a fat guy who reviewed my film.’ He also took up the example of Rajeev Masand and said, “I see him giving more than three stars to stupid films. Rajeev Masand gave 3.5 stars to Sanju. ‘Sanju where is my mangalsutra?’ What happens after that, you can talk volumes about it. Everybody loved it. When he says he slept with 300-odd women, we were all cheering and whistling in the theatre.”

After such explosive statements, it will be interesting to see the kind of reaction it gets from the industry, the critics and also Shahid Kapoor himself who recently thanked his fans for not judging the character but understanding and experiencing him.
