Karan Johar Declines Offer To Release Alia-Ranbir's Brahmastra Part 1 Directly On OTT, No Talks Of Sequels Yet: Reports

Alia Bhatt-Ranbir Kapoor starrer Brahmastra has left room for all kinds of speculations since the film has only been getting delayed and the Covid-19 pandemic hasn’t helped matters. The project which is being produced under Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions has been in works for nearly three years now and is yet to be completed.

Reports about Brahmastra’s OTT release have been doing the rounds and a Bollywood Hungama report recently revealed that Disney+ Hotstar, which has directly released many big films of 2020 on the platform, has shown keen interest in bagging the project. Happens so that Fox Star Studios could be looking at ceasing operations in India and being the joint producers of the project  with Karan, Disney+ Hotstar now wants to gain the rights to the Ayan Mukerji film.

A source tells the portal, "Disney+ Hotstar has now asked Fox Star Studios if they can hand over Brahmastra for their streaming platform. What it means is, Disney+ Hotstar wants Brahmastra to bypass theatrical release and arrive on its platform directly. They feel Brahmastra is a keenly awaited biggie and if it gets premiered on their platform, it'll fetch them record streams."

The reports, however, also clears that Karan Johar has no interest in giving Brahmastra an OTT release since he firmly believes that the movie will be best enjoyed on the big screen. The movie was aiming for December 2020 release before the pandemic struck but that won’t be possible now.

Brahmastra is supposed to be a three part franchise with Part 1 still in works, “As of now, there are no talks on the Brahmastra sequels. All the efforts of Dharma Productions and Fox Star Studios are on completing the first part. The shoot of the film is to get over this month after which the team will fully concentrate on the post-production," the source updated on the project.
