Karan Johar Taunts ‘Bhoot: The Haunted Ship’ Director On Being Questioned About Copying Hollywood’s Ghost Ship

Karan Johar’s Dharma Productions is into experimenting with various genres. With Vicky Kaushal's Bhoot The Haunted Ship, the production house is venturing into the horrpr genre. The trailer of the film was dropped today, however, one look at it and the uncanny resemblance that it shares with the 2002 Steve Beck directorial Ghost Ship is absolutely unmissable.

Ghost Ship tells the story of this haunted vessel that is adrift the Berring Sea. The film also kind of lives its past and shows the audiences its horrific background and in the trailer of Bhoot too we see a ship that mysteriously appears at a Mumbai shore and the diabolical occurrences reveal that the ship is haunted.

It was during the trailer launch that we asked the director of Bhoot, Bhanu Pratap Singh whether the film is in anyway influenced by Ghost Ship. He negated any influences point blank. However, Karan Johar pitched in and looked surprised at the fact that he didn’t even know a film of this sort even existed. He counter questioned the director, “Have you seen Ghost Ship?” Bhanu replied, “Yes, of course I have seen it.” Thereafter Karan went on to question him, “Did you copy Ghost Ship? Tell me now. I have not seen Ghost Ship." Vicky Kaushal pitched in and revealed he hasn’t seen Ghost Ship either. Karan Johar continued, “Who knows there might be a legal case against us because of this.” He went on to prod the director Bhanu, “If you have to own up something, confess now.”

The director then caught on saying, “It is not influenced. Ghost Ship is a different film and Bhoot is a different film.” Karan further pitched in between and asked, “Are you sure about it?” The director Bhanu replied, “Of Course.” Karan retorted, “I was just checking.”

Director Shashank Khaitaan who too was at the podium and is also touted to be Bhanu’s mentor was quick to defend his mentee, “No, I am also sure, the first thing I did was I saw Ghost Ship.”

Karan further went on to sarcastically point out the flagrant lifting culture in Bollywood where Indian filmmakers blatantly copy Hollywood. He said, “Waise bhi kya hai, originality is our strength, who bhi nahi hai, lekin yeh poori tarah copy nahi karte.” (The thing is originality is our strength, but that is not the case, he doesn’t make an exact copy.)
