For a long time now, reports of Amar Singh Chamkila's biopic had been doing the rounds. The film will be helmed by Imtiaz Ali and it will be the first biopic to be made by the director. The casting has been underway and rumours suggested that Ayushmann Khurrana might be playing the role. However, the singer's son wants Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan to play his parents in the biopic.

According to a report in ETimes, Amar Singh Chamkila's son, Jaiman said, "I would prefer Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan to play my parents." He also said that he'd heard rumours of Ranbir Kapoor or Ayushmann playing his father. "But Imtiaz Ali had brought sketches of Kartik Aaryan and Sara Ali Khan and I liked those. Kartik looked similar to my father in that sketch. But let's see. The cast is certainly not final. It will be announced in due course," he quipped.

He also added how Imitiaz had sought permission from him to make the biopic. He said, "Imtiaz had sent someone from his team sometime ago and I was happy to say yes. There will be a few modifications done though to make a nice film but I am okay with that." He also added, "Imtiaz Ali had come over, he was here for 3-4 hours and he wanted as much information as possible about my Dad and I gave it to him, as much as I remembered; after all, I was just 4 when my father passed away."

Amar Singh Chamkila was regarded as one of the best live stage performers that Punjab has ever produced and was extremely popular with the village audience. He wrote songs on real issues of Punjab and while a section thought his songs were obscene, a large number of the people loved it for its truthful commentary. He and wife Amarjot Kaur were assassinated and the case was never solved and no arrests were made.
