Filmmaker and long-time collaborator, Nagesh Kukunoor confirmed the news. He said, “I've been told he went in for a bypass surgery a few days ago but never came back. I am gathering more information. His death is devastating. He was the last of Renu Saluja school. She trained so many people but no one carried her legacy the way he did. In fact, Renu was editing 'Bollywood Calling' when she passed away. So he finished the editing but never took credit.”

Even director Sujoy Ghosh took to Twitter and expressed his grief. Check out his tweet:

Datta has been a part of more than 80 films in Hindi and Bengali and has worked with some of the finest directors in the country including the likes of Nagesh Kukunoor, Sriram Raghavan and Kundan Shah. Datta, everyone agrees, was a fine craftsman and his absence would be greatly felt in Bollywood.

We express our heartiest condolences to the bereaved family members and hope they find strength in these testing times.
