Mitron Review: Jo Baka - Mitron is One Of The Best Rom-Coms To Happen In Bollywood!

My Verdict: Breezy performances; beautifully layered writing and direction makes it, one of the best films this week!  A MUST WATCH

    4.5 out of 5 stars

Mitron is about friends, friendship goof ups, love, ego clashes, the rights and the wrongs we are so much a part of in this journey called life. It tells the story of a Gujju guy and a Gujju girl who are so different and yet are so similar. The film traces their lives set quite apart from each other but when a stroke of luck or should I say an error brings them together, they start discovering themselves, understanding themselves like they never did.

Jacky Bhagnani plays Jai, a Gujju Chokra who is almost good for nothing and he knows it - that makes his character endearing. He is a timid guy, who is scared of his father, scared of the dark, scared to speak his mind out in the open and a lot of other things. However, with his friends, he can be himself, he can be free, he can be a goofball and not be scared of being judged! He is so much like me, he is so much like you, he is so much like anyone for that matter. He is an engineer who can’t spell Thermodynamics and yet there is this strange likeability to him! Kritika Kamra plays this young feisty girl quite unlucky in love yet that doesn’t dissuade her from pursuing her passion, her ambitions and giving it her best shot in every way possible. Even though her father is hell bent on getting her married, she holds her ground and is determined to migrate to Australia. Set amidst a Gujrati milieu, there are certain references which can be understood by someone who is a Gujarati or has been a part of the Gujarati milieu. But the soul of the film will touch everyone’s hearts.

Jackky Bhagnani somehow becomes Jai, he has worked hard and it shows. His body-language, the forlorn expression in his eyes spoke to me, the self-pitying yet accepting-who-I-am helplessness is just so evident in everything he says or does (especially when he confronts his father and at times Avni). His forbidding father played (with an elan by Neeraj Sood) doesn’t leave any chance to taunt his son for his incapacities and yet Jai never hits back or retaliates.

Mitron Review: Jo Baka - Mitron is One Of The Best Rom-Coms To Happen In Bollywood!

Jackky understands the soul of the character and literally chows into it. His character doesn’t shy away from being materialistic, Jai acquiesces to the idea of getting married to a rich girl so that the would-be-bride’s father could grant him a huge sum for his dowry! Is it a bad thing to do? I honestly am not here to judge the character, he does what he feels is right for him and unabashedly so! Especially because Jackky plays it with such an ease, makes me wonder whether, it might be coming from an inner space, for a person who has seen a lot more failures than successes. This is a feel-good film and yet there were so many layers to Jai’s character, they literally stirred me and that is what I am intrigued about. The thing is; when one is successful, there is an innate sense of complacency, on the contrary for someone like Jai who really tries hard, is persistent but somehow, for some reason, doesn’t get what he deserves is automatically conditioned to value success, to value depth and to value love! The scene where, he recounts his pathetic experience with his piggish girlfriend stood out, when he cusses her in an all Gujarati soliloquy almost in one breath or be it the angry outburst against his promiscious girlfriend in his office - well there are any more such scenes.

Mitron Review: Jo Baka - Mitron is One Of The Best Rom-Coms To Happen In Bollywood!

Kritika Kamra looks very pretty in every frame. Mitron happens to be her big Bollywood debut and she plays Avni to the T. Her long tresses bounce with the slightest whiff of air, her coy smile, makes the heart skip a beat, when she pairs a dark pink dupatta with a plain white cotton shalwar and walks nonchalantly, she looks dreamily beautiful. Well, besides looking beauteous in every frame, she plays her character with utmost restraint and conviction. Her dialogue delivery, her silent glances do all the talking. Avni is a headstrong girl who doesn’t give in to the conventions and believes in holding on to her own. Kritika is charming and the way she portrays her role would make every guy out there to desire someone like Avni in their lives!

A surprise element in the film was the character of Vikram (Avni’s ex-flame) portrayed by Prateik Babbar. With every film, he seems to be growing bigger and better. The films that he is part of doesn’t really feature him in meaty roles but Prateik makes sure to give it his hundred percent and that is commendable indeed. In this film as well, he plays his part adorably. There is naughtiness, there is fun, there is romance and there is pain and guilt. In the small screen time allotted to him, he pulls every string of his character and really plays it with his heart.

Pratik Gandhi plays the motor mouth friend of Jai who doesn’t spare any chance of taking a jibe at the latter or anyone else for that matter. His quick wit outdoes anything and everything that falls in its way. And the best thing about him is the fact that no matter what, he stands with Jai like a rock. That’s exactly what Mitros (friends) are for. Pratik looks promising in his first act on the silver screen. The straight-face that he keeps with his wry responses is class apart! Shivam Parekh’s Deepu too is a fairly decent job done.

Mitron Review: Jo Baka - Mitron is One Of The Best Rom-Coms To Happen In Bollywood!

This is Nitin Kakkar’s second directorial after the much critically acclaimed Filmistan and what a fabulous director he is. Every little thing has been taken care of. The film never meanders into the maudlin and holds on to your attention. The feel-good factor, a tinge of materialism yet the understanding and acknowledgement of life as we know it has been dealt with adeptly. His characters are well-rounded and all have them have a background that is so beautifully etched into the story. One look at the characters and you figure out where is he or she coming from. B-E-A-Utiful!

Sharib Hashmi’s adaptation of the original penned by Thaarun Bhascker dhaassyam; retains its original flavour giving the film a Gujaraati twist. The dialogues are fabulous, especially the lines that were mouthed by Jackky. The music by Sameer Uddin is also a god joib done, especially with the Hindi rendition of two Gujarati folk songs Sanedo and Laal Bhammariya. The songs are a wonderful melange of foot-tapping numbers and soulful melodies.

All said and done Nitin Kakkar’s Mitron is a triumph in every way. We hope with the Ganpati fervour all around, Jackky gets blest and he really hits the jackpot with this one and Kritika is loved by all and sundry for her performance and Mitron gets all the love from friends and families all over because a film like this DESERVES TO!
