Onam marks the beginning of the harvest season for the Keralites. It is a ten-day festival that ends with Thiruvonam which according to legends is the day the spirit of Mahabali or the king of the demons visits earth. It is a major annual event for all the Malayali people in and outside Kerela. Onam is also the official state festival of Kerela with public holidays that last for four days starting on Uthradom.
