Ranveer Singh Reveals How He Bagged Zoya Akhtar’s Gully Boy; Calls It A ‘Glowing Gem’ In His Filmography

One of the most hard-working and exceptionally talented actors of the Hindi film industry, Ranveer Singh is a true superstar who has wowed the audience with back to back hits in his 10 year long career. While he portrays every character with equal ease, his spectacular performance in Zoya Akhtar’s directorial Gully Boy touched the audiences’ heart on a different level. In fact, when fans saw him on the big screen they did not see him as Ranveer Singh! They saw him as Murad, an underdog who resides in the Dharavi slums and impresses the world with his journey to stardom as a rapper.

Much to our delight, the actor recently revealed how he landed the lead role in Gully Boy and it is quite an interesting story. In a live Instagram chat hosted by Indian football team captain Sunil Chhetri, Ranveer shared, “It was a complicated process for me, becoming a part of Gully Boy. Zoya had to fly to Paris to give me a narration. She gave me the narration, she showed me the video. I was like, man this is just stuff of dreams. I can’t imagine such an amazing world and such an amazing character coming my way. But if I were to come on to the film, the wait would have been longer than Zoya wanted to wait and this part, that seemed perfect for me, there was a point where it was just going to slip out of my grasp.”

He went on to add, “In that also I persevered. I used to take selfies hood lagake (with a hoodie). Main selfies leke bhejta tha Zoya ko, I used to send her these long messages, ‘Zoya main bata raha hun, yeh role sirf main kar sakta hun. Tu ruk aur hum log banayenge aur aisa banayenge’. Fortunately for me, with the grace of the almighty, everything worked out and the film happened and it turned out to be a rewarding experience.” Ranveer further said, “I’m really proud of the team of Gully Boy and it will always be a glowing gem in my filmography.”

Also starring Alia Bhatt, Kalki Koechlin, Siddhant Chaturvedi, Vijay Varma, Amruta Subhash and Vijay Raaz, Gully Boy not only won hearts but was also India’s official entry for the 92nd Academy Awards in the Best International Feature Film category.
